Fibonacci retracement and Pivot Points are the two most popular horizontal-S/R frameworks in forex. Both produce levels that price reacts to. Both have decades of trader following. But they answer different questions, and using one when you should use the other is a common beginner mistake.

After running both stacked on the same charts for years, here’s the honest comparison — what each does well, where each fails, and which trading styles match each tool.

Quick Answer (TL;DR)

Fibonacci wins for: trend-following pullback entries, swing trading, identifying retracement depth in established trends.

Pivot Points win for: intraday range trading, daily-reset bias, classic floor-trader-style entries.

If you only want one: depends entirely on your style — Fib for trend traders, Pivots for day traders. They’re not interchangeable.

If you want both: run both. They’re complementary, not redundant.

Fib vs Pivot Side-by-Side

The two indicators stacked on the same EURUSD H1 chart. Fibonacci levels (gold) span the latest swing high to swing low. Pivot Points (yellow PP, red R-levels, green S-levels) sit at fixed daily-reset prices.

In a Trending Market

In a clean uptrend, Fibonacci dominates. Each pullback in the trend retraces to a Fib level (typically 38.2-61.8%) before the trend resumes. The 50% and 61.8% reactions are reliable enough that Fib is non-negotiable for trend traders.

Pivot Points in trending markets are less useful. PP itself can act as support if the trend opened above it, but the R/S levels often get blown through as the trend extends past them. Trying to fade R1 in a strong uptrend is a classic beginner trap.

Verdict in trending markets: Fibonacci wins.

In a Ranging Market

In sideways markets, Pivot Points win. PP, R1, and S1 act as range boundaries. Price oscillates between them; rejection at R1/S1 with appropriate confirmation = clean fade entries.

Fibonacci in a range is less useful. Without a clear trend swing, the latest “swing” the auto-Fib uses tends to be a small range high/low, producing levels that don’t capture meaningful S/R.

Verdict in ranging markets: Pivot Points win.

For Intraday Trading

Pivot Points are inherently intraday — they reset every day. The PP-R1-S1 levels match the natural rhythm of session-based day trading: open above PP = bullish bias, look for R1 rejection or PP retest.

Fibonacci can work intraday but the levels span the latest swing rather than the current session. For traders who want session-bounded levels, Pivots are the natural fit.

Verdict for intraday: Pivots win.

For Swing Trading

Fibonacci dominates swing trading. H4 and D1 Fib retracements give you target retracement zones for trend continuations. The 50% and 61.8% Fib retracements on a daily uptrend’s recent swing are the highest-edge swing entries in forex.

Weekly pivot points can work for swing trades but the level structure (PP/R1/R2/R3/S1/S2/S3) doesn’t match swing-trading logic as cleanly as Fibs.

Verdict for swing trading: Fibonacci wins.

For Confluence Stacking

Both work as confluence layers. Fib levels that align with structural S/R, round numbers, or supply/demand zones produce meaningfully stronger reactions. Same for Pivots.

The key insight: Fib + Pivot confluence is rarer than confluence within each framework, but when they DO align (a 61.8% Fib that lands on R1, for example), the resulting level is exceptional.

Verdict for confluence: Tied — both pair well with other tools.

For Beginners

Pivots are easier to learn. Fixed levels, daily reset, predictable behaviour. The PP-R1-S1 framework is mechanical enough that beginners can follow it without much subjective judgement.

Fibs require more skill — you need to identify the “right” swing for the auto-Fib to use. Auto-detection helps but can occasionally pick poor swings during transitions.

Verdict for beginners: Pivots win (lower learning curve).

The Honest Verdict

These aren’t competing tools — they’re complementary tools that answer different questions. Fibonacci tells you “where will this trend retrace to?”. Pivots tell you “where will today’s range respect?”.

If you have to pick one based on trading style:

Trend trader: Fibonacci

Day trader: Pivots

Swing trader: Fibonacci

Range trader: Pivots

Beginner: Pivots (easier) → graduate to adding Fibs once you’re comfortable

If you trade multiple styles, run both. The visual overhead is minimal and the confluence opportunities (Fib + Pivot at the same price) are exceptional setups.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are Fibs better than Pivots?

Better at different things. Fibs better in trends; Pivots better in ranges. Pick based on market regime, not preference.

Can I use both at the same time?

Yes — they’re complementary. Most professional traders run both.

Are both free?

Both our enhanced indicators are free below.

Which has higher win rate?

Fib 61.8% retracements in established trends have ~55-60% hit rate on H1 majors. Pivot R1/S1 reactions in ranges have similar hit rates. Win rate is style-dependent, not framework-dependent.

Best timeframe for each?

Fibs: H1 / H4 / D1. Pivots: M15 / H1 (with daily reference).

Drawing support and resistance manually is a fundamental skill every trader needs. Auto-detection indicators can do it (and we have one), but understanding HOW to draw S/R yourself teaches you to read the chart properly. Once you can draw clean S/R, every other technical analysis tool makes more sense.

This guide walks you through manual S/R drawing on MT4 using the built-in horizontal-line tool. By the end you’ll know which swings to pick, how to validate them, and the multi-timeframe stack that gives you context.

Step 1: Open the Horizontal Line Tool

The horizontal-line tool is built into MT4. There are 3 ways to access it:

Toolbar icon — the horizontal-line icon (looks like —) in the second-row toolbar

Insert menu — Insert > Lines > Horizontal Line

Keyboard shortcut — Ctrl+H (in some MT4 builds)

Click the icon, then click anywhere on the chart to place a horizontal line at that price level. To set an exact price, double-click the line and edit the “Price” field in the properties dialog.

Step 2: Pick the Right Swings

The most common beginner mistake: drawing lines at every minor pivot. The result is a chart full of lines, none of which are particularly meaningful.

The right approach: start on the H4 chart and only mark swings that produced clear reactions (sharp reversal, strong momentum candle in the opposite direction). Ignore micro-swings. You’re looking for institutional-scale pivots, not noise.

For H4 EURUSD, expect to find 3-7 meaningful swing highs and 3-7 meaningful swing lows over the past 200 bars. That’s the right density. If you’ve drawn 20+ lines, you’re including too much noise.

The qualifying signs of a meaningful swing pivot:

Sharp reversal candle at the extreme (pin bar, engulfing)

Strong momentum candle in the opposite direction immediately after

Multiple candles failing to break the level on subsequent tests

The level corresponds to a structurally important level (previous range high/low, round number)

Step 3: Validate with Multi-Touch

A swing high or low becomes a valid S/R level only when price touches it 2+ times. Single-touch lines are inherently weaker — you don’t have evidence the level is being defended.

For each line you’ve drawn, count the touches. Keep lines with 2+ touches; delete lines with only 1.

Visual weighting: lines with 4+ touches are the strongest. Make those bolder or thicker (right-click line > Properties > Width). Lines with 2-3 touches stay normal weight. This visual hierarchy makes the strongest levels jump out at a glance.

A “touch” includes both wicks and bodies. A wick that briefly tests a level then rejects = touch. A close at the level = touch. A clean break-through followed by retest = touch (the level has flipped polarity but is still active).

Step 4: Apply to Lower Timeframes

Once you’ve drawn H4 S/R, switch to H1 and M15. The H4 lines automatically appear on lower timeframes — they’re simply price levels and don’t depend on the chart timeframe.

Now you have HTF context for intraday trading. H4 lines act as your structural framework; you trade entries based on H1 / M15 price action AT those levels. This is the core multi-timeframe approach professional traders use.

Don’t draw new lines on H1 or M15. Beginners are tempted to add intraday-specific levels, but those just clutter the chart with noise. Use HTF lines exclusively, then add intraday context from indicators (Pivot Points for daily-reset levels, FVGs for entry precision).

Step 5: Maintain the Lines

S/R isn’t static. Levels become invalid over time as price extends past them or as the market regime changes.

Maintenance rules:

Delete lines that have been clearly broken (price closed beyond + showed continuation)

Flip polarity on broken lines that get retested from the other side (resistance becomes support)

Add new lines when fresh swing pivots form on H4

Reduce weight of older multi-touch lines that haven’t been tested in 100+ bars

A weekly maintenance session (5-10 minutes per pair) keeps your S/R map current.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Mistake 1: Drawing too many lines. Aim for 6-15 lines per pair on H4. More than that = noise.

Mistake 2: Drawing on lower timeframes first. Always start on H4 (or D1 for swing trading). Lower TFs are too noisy to identify structural levels.

Mistake 3: Anchoring lines to wicks vs bodies. Personal preference, but be consistent. I anchor to wick extremes (the high or low of the candle, not the close).

Mistake 4: Ignoring round numbers and pivots. Manual S/R should align with round numbers (1.1700, 1.1800) and major Pivot Points where possible. These are universal levels every algo references.

Mistake 5: Not maintaining lines. Lines drawn 6 months ago that haven’t been tested in 100+ bars are stale. Delete them.

When to Use Auto S/R Instead

Auto-S/R indicators (like our FOB_AutoSR) are useful for:

Secondary timeframes — manually draw H4, let auto handle H1 / M15

Multiple pairs — drawing H4 S/R on 8 majors takes time; auto handles the load

Beginners — gives you a starting reference while you develop manual-drawing skill

The professional approach: manual on your primary chart, auto on secondaries. That gives you the depth of manual analysis where you trade most + auto-context everywhere else.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many S/R lines should I draw?

6-15 per pair on H4. More than that adds noise without adding signal.

Should I draw lines on wicks or bodies?

Personal preference but be consistent. Most professional traders use wicks (the high or low of the candle).

How long do S/R lines stay valid?

Until they’re clearly broken or until they haven’t been tested in 100+ bars (which suggests the regime has moved on). Maintain weekly.

Manual or auto S/R — which is better?

Manual teaches you the framework and gives you better contextual reads. Auto handles secondary timeframes and watchlists efficiently. Use both.

Best timeframe for drawing S/R?

Start on H4 for day trading; D1 for swing trading. Lower timeframes are too noisy to identify structural levels.

Order block trading sounds complicated but mechanically it’s three setups: bullish retest, bearish retest, and the 50% mitigation entry. Each setup has clear rules, defined risk, and consistent expectancy when filtered properly. This guide covers all three with exact entry, stop, and target rules.

The setups work on EURUSD, GBPUSD, USDJPY, and gold (XAUUSD) on H1 charts during London and NY sessions. They lose edge during the Asian midnight chop where price drift produces too many low-quality OBs.

The 3 Order Block Setups

Bullish OB Retest — fresh bullish OB in an uptrend; trade the bounce

Bearish OB Retest — fresh bearish OB in a downtrend; trade the rejection

50% Mitigation — limit-order entry at the 50% mid-point of a fresh OB

For setups 1 and 2, you wait for price to reach the OB and confirm with a rejection candle. For setup 3, you set a limit order at the OB midpoint and let price come to you. Both work — pick one approach and stay consistent.

Setup 1: Bullish OB Retest

Entry conditions:
1. H4 trend is up (price above H4 50 EMA + Market Structure shows HH+HL pattern)
2. On H1, identify a fresh bullish OB (green rectangle from FOB_OrderBlock, untouched)
3. Wait for price to retrace down into the OB zone
4. Confirmation: a bullish rejection candle prints inside the OB (pin bar, engulfing, or strong bullish close)

Entry: On the close of the rejection candle.

Stop loss: 5-10 pips below the OB low (give some room for wick noise).

Take profit targets:
– TP1: 1.5R (the next minor structural high)
– TP2: 2.5-3R (the next major structural high)
– Trail: Move stop to break-even after TP1 hits; let TP2 ride

When to skip:
– H4 trend isn’t clearly up (mixed structure, price chopping around 50 EMA)
– The OB has been tested already (not fresh)
– Major news event within 30 minutes
– The rejection candle is small or has weak conviction

Setup 2: Bearish OB Retest

Entry conditions:
1. H4 trend is down (price below H4 50 EMA + Market Structure shows LL+LH)
2. On H1, fresh bearish OB (red rectangle, untouched)
3. Price retraces UP to the OB zone
4. Bearish rejection candle confirms inside the OB

Entry: On the close of the rejection candle.

Stop loss: 5-10 pips above the OB high.

Take profit:
– TP1: 1.5R (next minor structural low)
– TP2: 2.5-3R (next major structural low)
– Trail with structure after TP1

When to skip: Mirror of bullish — skip if H4 isn’t clearly down, OB isn’t fresh, news pending, or rejection is weak.

Setup 3: 50% Mitigation Entry

The mitigation entry uses a limit order at the OB midpoint instead of waiting for confirmation. ICT teaches that price often only needs to tap the 50% level before continuing.

Entry conditions:
1. H4 trend established (up or down per setups 1 and 2)
2. Fresh OB identified
3. Calculate the 50% mid-point: (OB high + OB low) / 2

Entry: Buy/Sell limit order at the 50% level (limit, not market).

Stop loss: Just beyond the OB extreme (low for longs, high for shorts).

Take profit: Same as setups 1 and 2 (1.5R, 2.5-3R).

Trade-off:
– Pros: Entry at better price, more entries triggered (don’t miss trades waiting for confirmation)
– Cons: No confirmation = lower win rate (price can blow through the entire OB)

In my testing, the 50% mitigation entry has ~5% lower win rate than the rejection-confirmation entry but ~15% better R:R because of the better entry price. Net expectancy is roughly the same. Pick based on whether you prefer hit rate (confirmation entry) or R:R (mitigation entry).

Risk Management Rules

Position sizing: Risk 1% of account per trade. OB setups are high-quality but you’ll have stretches of consecutive losers if you size up.

Daily loss limit: Stop trading if you lose 3 trades in a row in a single session. Consecutive losses indicate the regime isn’t matching your setup expectations.

Per-pair limit: Max 2 open OB trades per pair at any time. More than that = correlated risk you don’t need.

News blackout: Skip OB trades 30 minutes before/after high-impact news (NFP, CPI, FOMC, ECB). News blows through OBs regularly and the resulting moves are not OB-system trades.

Trade Management Rules

TP1 = 1.5R, TP2 = 2.5-3R. Take 50% off at TP1; let the rest target TP2. Move stop to break-even when TP1 hits.

Time stop: If a trade hasn’t moved meaningfully in either direction within 8-12 H1 bars, exit at break-even. The setup has lost its edge by then.

Don’t add to losers. If price moves against you toward the stop, the OB is failing. Don’t average down — take the defined-risk loss and move on.

Don’t move stops further away. Tightening to break-even after TP1 is correct. Moving stops further from price to “give the trade room” is the path to blown accounts.

Frequently Asked Questions

Win rate of these setups?

In my testing on H1 EURUSD over 12 months: bullish OB retest ~62%, bearish OB retest ~58%, 50% mitigation ~57%. With the H4 trend filter applied properly, all three are profitable.

Can these strategies work on M5 or M15?

Marginally. M15 is the lowest timeframe where OBs are tradable. Below that, signal-to-noise is poor.

Do I need all 3 setups or just one?

Pick one and master it. The bullish/bearish retest is the cleanest starting point. Add the 50% mitigation only after you’ve journaled enough trades to know your style.

What’s the best confluence for OB trades?

FVG inside the OB zone. An OB that overlaps with an FVG at the same price has noticeably higher win rate than either signal alone.

Best pairs for OB trading?

EURUSD, GBPUSD, USDJPY, XAUUSD. Liquid majors with predictable session patterns. Skip exotics — OB quality degrades.

ICT (Inner Circle Trader) trading isn’t a single setup — it’s a 5-phase sequence that institutional algos repeat across every liquid market. Liquidity Grab → Change of Character → Retracement → Order Block Retest → FVG Entry. When all 5 phases line up, you have one of the highest-edge setups in modern technical trading.

This guide walks you through the complete ICT sequence with chart examples for each phase, the entry rules I run live, and the risk management framework that keeps the strategy profitable across the inevitable losing streaks.

The 5-Phase ICT Setup

Phase 1: Liquidity — identify pools where retail stops cluster (equal swing extremes)

Phase 2: Liquidity Grab — price sweeps the pool with a wick, closes back through the level

Phase 3: Change of Character — price breaks the prior structural extreme against the existing trend

Phase 4: Retracement to Order Block — price retraces to a fresh OB in the new direction

Phase 5: FVG Entry — Fair Value Gap inside the OB provides precise entry trigger

Each phase confirms the previous one. Without the liquidity grab, the CHoCH is unreliable. Without the CHoCH, the OB retest lacks direction. Without the FVG inside the OB, you’re guessing at entry. The full sequence is the high-edge filter.

Full ICT Setup Walkthrough

The annotated chart above shows the complete sequence on a recent EURUSD H1 setup. Walk through each phase below as you reference the chart.

Phase 1: Liquidity

Open your H1 chart with the FOB_LiquidityZone indicator applied. The indicator marks two liquidity types:

Buy-Side Liquidity (BSL) — gold lines above clusters of equal swing highs

Sell-Side Liquidity (SSL) — blue lines below clusters of equal swing lows

These lines are where retail stops sit. BSL above resistance = where shorts have stops. SSL below support = where longs have stops. Institutions need this liquidity to fill their large positions, and they engineer price moves to grab it.

The setup begins when you have a clear, fresh liquidity pool that hasn’t been touched recently. Untouched pools are the magnets institutions target.

Phase 2: Liquidity Grab

The grab is a specific candle pattern: price sweeps the liquidity pool with a wick, but the candle closes BACK THROUGH the pool in the opposite direction. The wick took out stops; the close shows institutional reversal.

Critical distinction: a grab is a wick-through-then-back. A breakout is a body-through-and-continue. They look similar in real time but have opposite trade implications.

Grab: wick exceeds liquidity pool, candle closes back inside → reversal trade setup

Breakout: candle closes beyond the pool → don’t trade reversal, the new direction is established

Wait for the candle to close before classifying. False grabs (where the wick comes back but then price keeps going) happen — that’s why you wait for confirmation in later phases.

Phase 3: Change of Character (CHoCH)

After the liquidity grab, the next phase is structural confirmation. The Market Structure indicator (FOB_MarketStructure) draws CHoCH lines when price closes through the previous swing extreme AGAINST the existing trend.

If the trend was DOWN (LL+LH sequence) and price grabs sell-side liquidity then closes ABOVE the previous LH, that’s CHoCH up. Mirror for CHoCH down after BSL grab.

The CHoCH confirms institutional commitment to the new direction. Without CHoCH after a liquidity grab, the move is likely to fail (false reversal, price continues original trend).

Phase 4: Retracement to Order Block

After CHoCH, price typically retraces back to find a fresh order block in the NEW direction (the one institutions just confirmed).

Use FOB_OrderBlock to identify the fresh OB. After a CHoCH up, you’re looking for a fresh BULLISH OB above the swept low. After a CHoCH down, fresh BEARISH OB below the swept high.

Don’t enter blindly when price reaches the OB — wait for Phase 5.

Phase 5: Execution at FVG

Use FOB_FVG to identify Fair Value Gaps. The highest-confluence entries occur when an FVG sits INSIDE the order block zone. The FVG provides entry precision; the OB provides structural context.

Entry trigger: A bullish (or bearish) rejection candle prints inside the OB/FVG zone. Pin bar, engulfing, strong-close hammer all qualify.

Entry: On the close of the rejection candle.

Stop loss: Just beyond the liquidity-sweep extreme (the wick low for longs, wick high for shorts). This is typically 5-15 pips on H1 EURUSD.

Take profit:
– TP1: 1.5R (structural intermediate level)
– TP2: 2.5-3R (next major opposing structure)
– TP3 (optional): 4-5R (next liquidity pool in the opposite direction)

Risk Management

Position sizing: Risk 1% per trade. The 5-phase filter means setups are infrequent (1-3 per week per pair) but high-quality. You can afford to size standard.

News blackout: Skip ICT trades 30 minutes before/after high-impact news. The institutional algo that runs the ICT sequence isn’t active during news-driven moves.

Time stop: If the trade hasn’t moved meaningfully in 8-12 H1 bars, exit at break-even. The setup has lost edge.

Don’t add to losers. Defined-risk entry — stick to the original stop. If price moves against you, the OB is failing.

The Full Indicator Stack

Run all 4 indicators on your H1 chart:

FOB_LiquidityZone — Phase 1 (identify pools)

FOB_MarketStructure — Phase 3 (confirm CHoCH)

FOB_OrderBlock — Phase 4 (find OB)

FOB_FVG — Phase 5 (entry trigger)

Together this is the SMC pack — see Smart Money Concept MT4 for the bundled install.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Skipping phases. The 5-phase sequence works because each phase confirms the previous one. Trying to enter on just OB + FVG without liquidity + CHoCH context produces lower-quality setups.

Mistaking grabs for breakouts. A wick-through-and-back is a grab; a body-through-and-continue is a breakout. The difference is everything. Wait for the candle close before classifying.

Trading every CHoCH. CHoCH events without a preceding liquidity grab tend to fail. The grab provides the institutional motivation; without it, the structural break is weaker.

Stop too tight. Place stops just beyond the liquidity sweep extreme. Tighter stops get wicked out by normal volatility.

Holding losers. Defined risk = take the loss when it hits. Hoping for a turnaround is the path to blown accounts.

Frequently Asked Questions

What’s the win rate of the full ICT setup?

With proper 5-phase filtering, my testing on H1 EURUSD shows ~65% over 12 months. The trade frequency is low (1-3 setups per week per pair), but each is high quality.

Can the ICT strategy work without all 4 indicators?

You can identify the phases manually but it’s slower. The indicators surface the patterns automatically so you don’t miss setups during charting fatigue.

Best timeframe for ICT?

H1 is the workhorse. H4 produces fewer but higher-quality setups for swing traders. M15 is borderline — too noisy for the multi-phase confirmation.

Best pairs for ICT?

EURUSD, GBPUSD, USDJPY, XAUUSD, US30. Liquid markets where the institutional algos that run ICT-style setups are active.

Are these indicators free?

Yes — all 4 are free below as the SMC pack. No subscriptions, no premium tiers.

Free Smart Money Concept (SMC) indicator pack for MT4. Order Blocks + FVGs + Liquidity Zones + Market Structure on one chart. The full SMC toolkit institutional traders use.

Smart Money Concept (SMC) trading isn’t a single technique — it’s a framework with 4 interlocking concepts: Order Blocks for institutional zones, Fair Value Gaps for entry precision, Liquidity Zones for stop-hunt context, and Market Structure for trend phase. To trade SMC properly, you need all 4 working together.

This pack delivers the complete SMC toolkit as a single bundled install. Below is how each indicator slots into the framework, the full SMC entry strategy I trade live on H1 EURUSD, and the workflow that brings them all together.

What is the Smart Money Concept?

SMC is the framework popularised by ICT (Inner Circle Trader) that focuses on reading institutional positioning footprints rather than retail technical signals. The 4 core concepts:

Order Blocks — last opposing candle before impulse = institutional zone

Fair Value Gaps (FVGs) — 3-candle imbalance = unfilled institutional orders

Liquidity Zones — equal swing extremes = retail stop pools institutions hunt

Market Structure — HH/HL/LL/LH sequence + BOS/CHoCH = trend phase reading

The institutional logic threading them together: institutions need liquidity to fill their large positions. They engineer price moves that grab retail liquidity (stop hunts), then position at order blocks during the resulting volatility. Fair Value Gaps form during their impulsive moves and act as entry zones for retracements. Market structure reading tells you which trend phase you’re in.

The single-pack delivery means all 4 indicators share consistent settings — no parameter mismatches, no separate installs, no drift between updates.

How the SMC Stack Works on MT4

Our FOB SMC pack applies all 4 indicators with synchronised default settings: 200-bar lookback, 5-bar swing detection, ATR-based impulse threshold for OBs, hide-filled FVGs, multi-touch liquidity clustering.

The visual result: a chart with structural labels (HH/HL/LL/LH), liquidity pool lines, OB rectangles, FVG rectangles, and BOS/CHoCH lines all stacked together. Visually dense but information-rich.

Three reading patterns matter for SMC traders.

The first is liquidity grab + CHoCH + OB retest — the classic SMC reversal sequence. Liquidity sweep followed by structural break (CHoCH) followed by retest of a fresh OB = high-edge entry.

The second is OB + FVG confluence — fresh OBs that overlap with FVGs are the highest-confluence entries. Both signals confirming the same zone produces noticeably better win rate than either alone.

The third is structural trend filtering — only trade SMC setups aligned with the current Market Structure phase. CHoCH up = look for long setups. CHoCH down = look for shorts. Mid-range = stand aside.

How to Install SMC Pack on MT4

The SMC pack is custom. See install custom indicators on MT4.

Step 1: Download the SMC pack (4 .ex4 files) from the form below.

Step 2: MT4 > File > Open Data Folder > MQL4 > Indicators. Drop all 4 .ex4 files in.

Step 3: Restart MT4 (or refresh Navigator).

Step 4: Apply the included template (“SMC-H1”) for one-click setup with all 4 indicators stacked.

Step 5: Save under a new name to preserve your customisations.

Trading Strategy: Full SMC Setup

The complete SMC entry sequence. Best on H1 EURUSD, GBPUSD, gold during London/NY sessions.

Setup: Full SMC pack on H1 chart.

Long Entry (full SMC sequence):
1. Market Structure shows downtrend (LL + LH sequence)
2. Liquidity Zone shows sell-side liquidity below recent swing lows
3. Price sweeps the SSL with a wick (liquidity grab)
4. Closing candle reverses back UP through the SSL
5. Market Structure CHoCH up confirms the regime change
6. Identify a fresh bullish OB above the swept low
7. Wait for retracement to the OB
8. FVG within the OB zone provides entry-precision trigger
9. Enter long on bullish rejection candle inside OB/FVG zone
10. Stop loss below the swept low (5-10 pips)
11. Take profit at the next major structural high

Short Entry: Mirror the sequence — uptrend, BSL grab above swing high, CHoCH down, fresh bearish OB, FVG entry.

The discipline that matters: every step in sequence. Liquidity grab WITHOUT CHoCH = false reversal. CHoCH without OB retest = chase-the-move trade. OB retest without FVG = lower-confluence setup. The full sequence is the high-edge filter.

SMC vs Pure ICT

Verdict: Use the SMC pack for the convenience of one install + one template. Use individual ICT indicators if you want maximum per-indicator parameter control.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the SMC indicator pack free?

Yes. All 4 .ex4 files are free below. Premium SMC tools cost $50-300/month for equivalent functionality.

Does the pack repaint?

No. All 4 indicators are non-repainting once their swing-bars filters confirm.

How is SMC different from regular technical analysis?

Regular TA focuses on price patterns and indicator signals. SMC focuses on institutional footprints — order blocks, liquidity grabs, fair value imbalances. Different read, different edges.

Best timeframe for SMC?

H1 and H4. Lower timeframes have too many false signals; daily SMC is excellent for swing entries but signals are too rare for active trading.

Can I use this on MT5?

Yes. Our enhanced version supports both platforms.

Manual Fibonacci is one of the most useful S/R tools in technical analysis — and one of the most tedious to draw. Every new swing requires re-clicking the high, dragging to the low, adjusting for the new range. After 15 years of doing it by hand I built this auto-Fib indicator, and now it’s the first thing I add to every fresh chart.

This guide covers the auto-Fibonacci MT4 indicator, the 50% and 61.8% levels that actually matter, and the bounce strategy I trade live on H1 EURUSD.

What is Fibonacci Retracement?

Fibonacci retracement uses the Golden Ratio sequence (0.236, 0.382, 0.5, 0.618, 0.786) to predict where a pullback will end during a trend. After a swing high to swing low (or vice versa), price often retraces to one of these specific percentages before resuming the original trend.

The mathematical basis is real — Fibonacci ratios appear throughout nature, from spiral shells to galaxy arms. Whether the market mathematically respects them or whether enough traders watch them to make them self-fulfilling is debatable. What’s not debatable is that the 50% and 61.8% levels DO produce visible reactions on most forex pairs most of the time.

The standard levels:

23.6% — shallow retracement, common in strong trends

38.2% — moderate retracement

50% — not technically a Fib number but the most-watched level

61.8% — the “Golden Ratio” — deepest typical pullback in healthy trends

78.6% — extreme retracement; beyond this and the trend may have ended

How Fibonacci Retracement Works on MT4

Our FOB_AutoFib.ex4 scans the last 200 bars (configurable), identifies the most recent significant swing high and low, and plots all the Fib levels automatically. Every new significant swing redraws the levels — no manual clicking required.

Three patterns matter for forex traders.

The first is the 50% / 61.8% bounce. After a swing high → swing low → bounce, look for price to retrace 50% to 61.8% of the bounce, then resume direction. This is the highest-edge Fib pattern I trade. The 50% and 61.8% levels are highlighted in our indicator as “key Fibs” with thicker, brighter lines.

The second is the 78.6% extreme test. If price retraces past 61.8% but holds above 78.6%, it’s still a valid retracement (just deeper than typical). A close beyond 78.6% usually signals the original swing direction has changed.

The third is Fib confluence. Fib levels that overlap with structural S/R, round numbers, or pivot points are exponentially stronger. A 61.8% retracement that lands at a previous swing low + a major round number = high-probability bounce zone.

Key Features

Custom MT4 indicator (FOB_AutoFib.ex4)

Auto-detection of latest swing high and low

Plots 23.6, 38.2, 50, 61.8, 78.6 + 0/100 levels

50% and 61.8% highlighted as “key Fibs” with thicker lines

Configurable lookback (default 200 bars)

Configurable swing-pivot detection (default 5 bars each side)

Updates automatically as new swings form

Non-repainting once swing is confirmed

Best Settings for Fibonacci Indicator

How to Install Fibonacci Indicator on MT4

The auto-Fibonacci indicator is custom. See install custom indicators on MT4.

Step 1: Download FOB_AutoFib.ex4 from the form below.

Step 2: MT4 > File > Open Data Folder > MQL4 > Indicators. Drop the .ex4 in.

Step 3: Restart MT4 (or refresh Navigator).

Step 4: Drag FOB_AutoFib onto your H1 chart. Set Lookback to 200, SwingBars to 5.

Step 5: Save as a chart template (“Fib-H1”) for one-click reuse.

Trading Strategy: 61.8 Bounce

The cleanest Fib strategy. Best on H1 EURUSD, GBPUSD, gold during established trends.

Setup: FOB_AutoFib + 50 EMA on price for trend context.

Long Entry (uptrend pullback):
1. H4 trend is up — price above H4 50 EMA
2. On H1, identify a clear bullish swing (low → high → pullback)
3. Wait for price to retrace into the 50% to 61.8% Fib zone
4. Enter long when price prints a bullish rejection candle in the zone
5. Stop loss 5-10 pips below the 78.6% Fib level
6. Take profit at the 100% extension (recent swing high)

Short Entry (downtrend pullback):
1. H4 trend down — price below H4 50 EMA
2. Bearish swing on H1 (high → low → bounce)
3. Wait for retracement into 50%-61.8% Fib zone
4. Enter short on bearish rejection candle
5. Stop loss above 78.6% Fib
6. Take profit at recent swing low

The discipline that matters: don’t fade trends. If H4 is bullish, only take long Fib entries. Counter-trend Fib trades have lower hit rates.

Fibonacci vs Pivot Points

Both define horizontal S/R. Different derivation.

Feature

Fibonacci

Pivot Points

Source

Latest swing high/low

Previous day’s H/L/C

Updates

Each new significant swing

Daily at session start

Best for

Trend-following pullback entries

Intraday range trading

Verdict: Use Fibs for trend pullbacks; use Pivots for intraday range fades. They’re complementary — many traders run both.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the auto-Fibonacci indicator free?

Yes. Our FOB_AutoFib.ex4 is free below. MT4’s built-in Fibonacci tool is manual-draw only.

Does the indicator repaint?

The Fib levels redraw when a new significant swing forms (which is the desired behaviour). Once a swing is confirmed by the swing-bars filter, those levels are stable until the next swing.

What’s the most important Fib level?

61.8%. It’s the Golden Ratio and produces the most reliable reactions on majors. 50% is the next most-watched (despite not being a true Fib number).

Best timeframe for Fibonacci?

H1 and H4 give the cleanest swing identification. M5 swings are too small to be meaningful; daily Fibs are excellent for swing trades.

Can I use this on MT5?

Yes. Our enhanced version supports both platforms.

The Fibonacci sequence and its derivatives produce some of the most-watched S/R levels in technical analysis. Standard retracements give you 38.2/50/61.8 levels. Harmonic patterns extend the math into 5-point structures. Murray Math takes a different angle — octave division of price ranges. Gann’s angled lines belong here too because they share Fibonacci’s mathematical-pattern philosophy.

After running every Fibonacci-family tool against live forex markets, these are the five that earn screen space. Ranked by signal quality and practical applicability.

Comparison Table

The 5 Fibonacci-family indicators with their primary use case.

1. Auto Fibonacci Retracement — Best Overall

The standard 23.6/38.2/50/61.8/78.6 levels, auto-drawn from the latest swing. The 50% and 61.8% reactions on majors are reliable enough that these levels are non-negotiable on a working trader’s chart.

Why it ranks #1: Universal — every trader watches Fib levels, and the auto-redraw eliminates manual tedium.
Best for: Trend-following pullback entries.
Best timeframe: H1 / H4.

2. Harmonic Patterns — Best for Reversal Edge

5-point XABCD patterns (Gartley, Bat, Butterfly, Crab) defined by specific Fibonacci leg ratios. The D-point reversal entries have 55-65% hit rates with proper filters — high edge for the patience required.

Why it ranks #2: Some of the highest-edge reversal signals in technical analysis when valid patterns appear.
Best for: Swing traders patient enough to wait for valid patterns.
Best timeframe: H1 / H4.

Full review: Harmonic Patterns MT4.

3. Murray Math Lines — Best Mid-Range Reads

Divides recent price range into 8 octaves. The 4/8 (50%) line is the strongest mid-range S/R signal. Pairs naturally with Fibonacci 50% for confluence.

Why it ranks #3: 4/8 line works as standalone mid-range filter; full set adds octave context.
Best for: Range-day traders looking for mid-zone reactions.
Best timeframe: H1.

Full review: Murray Math Lines MT4.

4. Gann Fan — Best Angular S/R

The 1×1 angle (45 degrees) acts as a clean dynamic trend filter. Less universally watched than horizontal Fibs but still produces reactions on majors when calibrated correctly.

Why it ranks #4: 1×1 trend filter is genuinely useful; broader Gann numerology is debatable.
Best for: Trend traders looking for angular S/R confluence.
Best timeframe: H1 / H4.

Full review: Gann Fan MT4.

5. Fibonacci Pivots — Best Hybrid

Pivot points calculated using Fibonacci ratios (38.2 / 61.8 / 100% of previous range) instead of Classic formula. Tighter than Camarilla, more reactive than Classic. Built into our pivot points indicator as an alternative formula.

Why it ranks #5: Niche but useful for traders wanting Fib-derived intraday levels.
Best for: Day traders who already use Fibonacci and want intraday version.
Best timeframe: M15 / H1.

Full review: Pivot Points MT4 (configure formula to Fibonacci).

The Fibonacci Stack I Run

Two indicators on every Fibonacci-focused chart:

Auto-Fibonacci Retracement — primary S/R signal at 50/61.8% on the latest swing

Harmonic Patterns — secondary reversal signal when valid patterns complete

That’s enough to capture the bulk of Fibonacci-edge setups. Add Murray Math 4/8 line if you trade ranges; add Gann 1×1 if you want angular trend filter.

What I Don’t Use

Fibonacci extensions for projection — the 1.272 / 1.618 / 2.618 extensions can work as targets but I get cleaner targets from structural pivots. Skip extensions unless you specifically trade Elliott Wave style.

Fibonacci time zones — vertical time-based Fib lines. Theoretical but I’ve never found them tradable. Skip.

Fibonacci spirals / arcs — visually distinctive but signal quality is poor on forex. Save them for crypto traders who like the aesthetics.

Frequently Asked Questions

What’s the most important Fibonacci level?

61.8%. The Golden Ratio produces the most reliable reactions on majors. 50% is second — not technically a Fib number, but the most-watched level.

Are these indicators free?

Yes — all 5 are free downloads from this site.

Can I run all 5 at once?

Visually, the Auto-Fib + Harmonic + Murray Math combo is the most you should run. Adding Gann + Fib Pivots produces clutter without adding much signal.

Best timeframe for Fibonacci?

H1 and H4. Fibs on M5/M15 produce too many redraws as small swings form; daily Fibs are excellent for swing trades.

Do Fibonacci levels actually work or is it self-fulfilling?

Both. The mathematical basis is debatable but enough traders watch the levels to make them produce reactions reliably. Reactions are real even if the underlying theory isn’t bulletproof.

Pivot points predate computers. Floor traders at the Chicago Mercantile Exchange calculated them by hand each morning using yesterday’s high, low, and close. The same arithmetic, applied automatically by every modern trading platform, still produces reactions today — partly because it’s mathematically meaningful (PP = average price of yesterday) and partly because so many traders watch the levels that they self-fulfill.

This guide covers the daily pivot points MT4 indicator, the levels that actually matter (PP, R1, S1), and the bounce strategy I trade intraday on H1 EURUSD.

What are Pivot Points?

The classic pivot formula is brutally simple:

PP (Pivot Point) = (Previous High + Low + Close) / 3

R1 = 2 × PP − Previous Low

S1 = 2 × PP − Previous High

R2 = PP + (Previous High − Low)

S2 = PP − (Previous High − Low)

R3 = Previous High + 2 × (PP − Low)

S3 = Previous Low − 2 × (Previous High − PP)

The output: 7 horizontal levels that update once per day at session start, drawn across the current day’s price chart. PP is the central level (the most-watched). R1/S1 are the first targets above/below. R2/S2/R3/S3 are progressively further extensions.

The variants — Camarilla, Woodie, DeMark, Fibonacci pivots — use different formulas with different emphasis. Classic remains the most widely watched on forex; Camarilla is the popular alternative with tighter reversal levels.

How Pivot Points Work on MT4

Our FOB_PivotPoints.ex4 calculates daily pivots from the previous day’s iHigh/iLow/iClose and plots all 7 levels as horizontal lines extending across the current day. Lines reset automatically at the daily session start.

Three patterns matter for forex traders.

The first is PP as session bias. Price above PP all session = bullish bias. Below PP = bearish. This single rule eliminates a huge chunk of poor-context entries.

The second is R1 / S1 reactions. The first level above and below PP produces the most reliable reactions during the session. Most days price tests R1 or S1 at least once; rejection at these levels with a clean candle is one of the cleanest intraday setups.

The third is R2 / S2 extreme tests. R2 and S2 mark statistically extended moves. Reaching R2 or S2 in a single session means price has moved more than a typical day’s range — these are where intraday reversals often originate.

R3 and S3 are statistically rare touches — tag them and you’ve had a major-event day (NFP, FOMC, surprise data).

Key Features

Custom MT4 indicator (FOB_PivotPoints.ex4)

Auto-calculation of PP, R1, R2, R3, S1, S2, S3

Configurable reference timeframe (D1 daily, W1 weekly, MN1 monthly)

Lines extend across current period (full day for daily pivots)

Optional level labels

Resets automatically at period boundary

Non-repainting

Best Settings for Pivot Points

The default daily timeframe is correct for intraday traders. Weekly pivots add structural context for swing trades.

How to Install Pivot Points on MT4

The Pivot Points indicator is custom. See install custom indicators on MT4.

Step 1: Download FOB_PivotPoints.ex4 from the form below.

Step 2: MT4 > File > Open Data Folder > MQL4 > Indicators. Drop the .ex4 in.

Step 3: Restart MT4 (or refresh Navigator).

Step 4: Drag FOB_PivotPoints onto your H1 chart. Default settings (D1 reference timeframe) work for most use cases.

Step 5: Save as a chart template (“Pivot-H1”) for one-click reuse.

Trading Strategy: Pivot Bounce

The cleanest pivot strategy. Best on H1 EURUSD, GBPUSD, USDJPY during European/NY sessions.

Setup: FOB_PivotPoints with daily reference. Add a 50 EMA on price for trend context.

Long Entry (S1 bounce in uptrend):
1. Daily bias is bullish — price opened above PP and held
2. Price retraces down to S1 during the session
3. A bullish rejection candle confirms (pin bar, engulfing) at S1
4. Enter long on rejection candle close
5. Stop loss 5-10 pips below S1
6. Take profit at PP or R1 (typical 1.5-2.5R)

Short Entry (R1 rejection in downtrend):
1. Daily bias is bearish — price opened below PP and held
2. Price rallies up to R1
3. Bearish rejection candle confirms at R1
4. Enter short on rejection close
5. Stop loss 5-10 pips above R1
6. Take profit at PP or S1

The discipline that matters: don’t fade strong trends. If price has been pushing through R1 toward R2 with momentum, the next R-level is more likely to break than reject. Use 50 EMA slope as a momentum filter.

Pivot Points vs Fibonacci

Both define horizontal S/R. Different derivation.

Verdict: Pivots for intraday day-trading; Fibs for trend-following pullbacks. Many traders run both — they’re complementary.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are pivot points free?

Yes. Our FOB_PivotPoints.ex4 is free below.

Do pivot points repaint?

No. Once calculated at the session start, levels are locked for the entire day.

What’s the best pivot variant — Classic, Camarilla, or Fibonacci?

Classic for forex (most widely watched). Camarilla for narrow-range reversal trading. Fibonacci pivots are a hybrid — try them if standard pivots feel too far apart.

Best timeframe?

H1 with daily pivots is the workhorse. M5/M15 for scalpers; H4 with weekly pivots for swing traders.

Can I use this on MT5?

Yes. Our enhanced version supports both platforms.

Order Blocks and Supply/Demand zones are the two most popular institutional-zone frameworks in modern trading. Both define areas where smart money positioned. Both produce reactions when price returns. Both have devoted followings. So which should you actually use?

After running both stacked on the same charts for the past 18 months, here’s the honest comparison — what each does well, where each fails, and the trading styles where each one wins.

Quick Answer (TL;DR)

Order Blocks win for: precision entries, tight stops, ICT/SMC trading framework, low-risk-per-pip setups.

Supply/Demand wins for: wider safety margins, broader zone-based reads, beginners learning institutional positioning.

If you only want one: Order Blocks (more precise, defined-risk, pairs with the full ICT framework).

If you want both: Supply/Demand zones for higher-timeframe context, Order Blocks for entry precision within those zones.

OB vs SD Side-by-Side

The two indicators stacked on the same EURUSD H1 chart. Order Blocks are tighter (single-candle rectangles). Supply/Demand zones are wider (multi-candle base + impulse boxes).

Precision vs Zone Width

Order Blocks are by definition single-candle. The zone is the high and low of one bar — typically 10-30 pips wide on H1 EURUSD. The stop loss sits just beyond the OB extreme, giving you a defined risk that’s often 15-25 pips total.

Supply/Demand zones span multiple base candles. The zone is the highest high and lowest low across the consolidation — often 30-60 pips wide on H1. The stop loss beyond the zone extreme produces a 40-70 pip risk.

Implication: OBs give you better R:R per trade (smaller risk denominator). SD zones give you more breathing room (less likely to be stopped on a wick).

Verdict in precision: Order Blocks win. Tighter stops, better R:R.

In a Trending Market

Both work in trending markets. The difference is signal frequency.

In a clean uptrend, OBs print frequently — every retracement creates a new bullish OB candidate (the last opposing candle before the next impulse). SD zones are rarer — they require the base + impulse pattern, which doesn’t form on every pullback.

For active trend trading, OBs win because they give you more trade opportunities. For positional trend trading where you wait for HTF zones, SD wins because the rarer zones tend to be structurally important.

Verdict in trends: OBs for active trading, SD for HTF positioning.

In a Ranging Market

Ranging markets favour neither framework strongly. Both produce zones at the range extremes; both reactions tend to fade as price oscillates within the range.

The edge in ranges comes from confluence — zones that overlap with horizontal S/R, round numbers, or previous swing extremes. Both OB and SD zones get amplified by the same confluence factors.

Verdict in ranges: Tied. Confluence matters more than the framework choice.

For Stop Hunts

This is where the frameworks diverge most. Order Blocks pair with the full ICT framework (Liquidity Zones + Market Structure) which explicitly addresses stop hunts. The “liquidity grab + CHoCH + OB retest” sequence is the canonical ICT setup.

Supply/Demand traders typically read stop hunts less explicitly. The wider zones absorb wick-through stop hunts that would invalidate tighter OB setups, but you don’t get the same explicit framework for trading the post-hunt reversal.

Verdict for stop hunts: OBs win (when paired with the ICT framework).

For Day Trading

On H1 day trades, OBs produce more entries per session. With proper structural filtering (only trade with-trend OBs), the higher signal frequency translates to more trades per week.

SD zones on H1 produce fewer entries but each one has more breathing room. For a trader who prefers fewer-but-wider trades, SD wins.

Verdict for day trading: OBs for higher trade frequency, SD for fewer-but-wider entries.

For Swing Trading

On H4/D1 swing setups, the comparison flips. SD zones on higher timeframes are rare but structurally important — they tend to be the zones price respects for weeks.

H4/D1 OBs are also valid, but the precision advantage matters less when your stop is already 100+ pips. Most swing traders find SD zones easier to read on higher TFs.

Verdict for swing trading: SD zones on H4/D1.

Settings: How to Configure Each

Order Block — lookback (200 bars on H1), impulse bars (3), impulse ATR threshold (1.5x). Default settings work for most pairs.

Supply/Demand — lookback (200 bars), max base body/range ratio (0.4), impulse ATR (2.0x). Slightly stricter than OB filters because the base requirement is itself a filter.

The Honest Verdict

If you have to pick one institutional-zone framework: Order Blocks. The precision is meaningfully better for retail traders working with limited account size, and the integration with the full ICT framework (FVGs, Liquidity, Market Structure) gives you a complete trading system rather than just a zone-detection tool.

If you trade swing setups exclusively on H4/D1, Supply/Demand zones are slightly easier to read and the wider stops are appropriate for the timeframe. Some swing traders prefer SD on this basis.

If you run both: SD on H4 for HTF context, OBs on H1 for entry precision. This is the combination that most ICT/SMC educators teach as “best of both worlds”.

When to Use Each

Use Order Blocks when:
– You’re learning ICT/SMC and want the precise framework
– You’re day trading H1 and want defined-risk entries
– You want the highest R:R per trade
– You pair with FVGs and liquidity for full confluence

Use Supply/Demand when:
– You’re swing trading H4/D1
– You want wider zones with built-in safety margin
– You prefer broader institutional context to single-candle precision
– You’re transitioning from horizontal S/R and want a familiar zone-based read

Frequently Asked Questions

Are OBs and SD really different things?

Mostly yes. OBs require the last opposing candle before impulse; SD requires base candles. They sometimes overlap at the same price but they’re defined differently.

Which has higher win rate?

OBs have a slight edge when filtered properly (with structure + FVG confluence) — typically 55-65% on H1 majors. SD zones are similar but slightly lower (50-60%). Differences narrow on higher timeframes.

Can I use both on the same chart?

Yes — they’re complementary. SD provides HTF context; OBs provide LTF precision. Most ICT educators teach the combination.

Are both indicators free?

Both our FOB versions are free below.

Best timeframe for each?

OBs: H1 / H4. SD zones: H4 / D1. Lower timeframes have too many low-quality zones for either.

Free auto Support & Resistance indicator for MT4. Detects swing pivots, clusters multi-touch zones, draws horizontal levels weighted by touch count. The hands-off SR tool I keep on every chart.

The post Support and Resistance Indicator MT4 – Auto SR Levels appeared first on Forexobroker.

Drawing support and resistance manually is a fundamental skill every trader should master. But once you’ve drawn it on your primary chart, doing the same exercise on H4 + D1 + W1 for context is repetitive. This auto-S/R indicator handles secondary timeframes for me — same multi-touch logic I’d apply by hand, executed automatically across any timeframe in seconds.

Below is how the indicator works, the multi-touch settings I use, and the rejection-entry strategy that pairs cleanly with manual S/R on your primary chart.

What is Auto Support and Resistance?

The indicator combines two well-established techniques:

Swing pivot detection — find the local high (or low) where the bars on each side are lower (or higher). A 5-bar swing means the bar’s high is greater than the 5 bars before AND the 5 bars after.

Touch clustering — group swing pivots within a tolerance (e.g., 50 points). The level price is the average of clustered pivots.

A level that contains 4 swing pivots within tolerance is a stronger S/R than one with 2. Our indicator weights the line width proportionally to touch count, so the strongest zones jump off the chart visually.

The two parameters that matter:

Tolerance — how close pivots need to be to cluster as the same level. Tight (20 points) catches precise levels but misses approximate zones; loose (100 points) catches broader zones but flags too many.

Min touches — minimum pivots required for a level to be drawn. 2 = lots of weak levels; 3-4 = only the strongest. Default is 2 for completeness.

How Auto S/R Detection Works on MT4

Our FOB_AutoSR.ex4 scans the last 300 bars (configurable), finds all swing pivots using the configurable swing-bars filter, clusters them within tolerance, and draws horizontal lines at multi-touch zones. Resistance lines (above current price) are red; support (below) is green.

Three patterns matter for forex traders.

The first is fresh level rejection. A level that’s been hit 3+ times historically and price is approaching for the first time in many bars = high-probability reversal. The line width on our indicator (proportional to touch count) makes these jump out.

The second is level break with retest. When price breaks a strong level, that level often flips polarity (resistance becomes support, vice versa). Auto-S/R levels still appear on the chart after the break — when price retests them from the other side, you have a high-edge continuation entry.

The third is multi-timeframe confluence. Apply the indicator on H1, H4, and D1. Levels that appear on all three are structural pivots — the strongest S/R you can find without ICT-style order blocks.

Key Features

Custom MT4 indicator (FOB_AutoSR.ex4)

Auto-detection of swing pivots + clustering

Configurable lookback (default 300 bars)

Configurable swing-bars filter (default 5 bars each side)

Configurable tolerance for touch clustering

Configurable min touches (default 2)

Line width proportional to touch count (visual weighting)

Non-repainting once swings are confirmed

Best Settings for Auto S/R Indicator

The defaults work for H1 majors. Adjust tolerance and min touches based on volatility.

Recommended starting point: H1 EURUSD with 300-bar lookback, 5-bar swings, 50-point tolerance, 2 min touches.

Pros and Cons

Hands-off — eliminates the tedium of redrawing S/R as new swings form

Less context-aware than manual drawing — captures touches but not regime changes

Works on every timeframe and instrument

Settings need tuning per pair (volatility differences)

Pairs cleanly with manual drawing on primary chart

How to Install Auto S/R Indicator on MT4

The Auto S/R indicator is custom. See install custom indicators on MT4.

Step 1: Download FOB_AutoSR.ex4 from the form below.

Step 2: MT4 > File > Open Data Folder > MQL4 > Indicators. Drop the .ex4 in.

Step 3: Restart MT4 (or refresh Navigator).

Step 4: Drag FOB_AutoSR onto your H1 chart with default settings.

Step 5: Save as a chart template (“AutoSR-H1”) for one-click reuse.

Trading Strategy: Level Rejection

The cleanest auto-SR strategy. Best on H1 EURUSD, GBPUSD, gold during London/NY sessions.

Setup: FOB_AutoSR + 50 EMA on price for trend context.

Long Entry (support bounce in uptrend):
1. H4 trend is up — price above H4 50 EMA
2. On H1, identify a thick (multi-touch) auto-SR support line below current price
3. Wait for price to retrace down to the level
4. Enter long when price prints a bullish rejection candle at the level
5. Stop loss 10-15 pips below the level
6. Take profit at the next major auto-SR resistance line above

Short Entry (resistance rejection in downtrend):
1. H4 trend down — price below H4 50 EMA
2. Identify thick multi-touch auto-SR resistance above current price
3. Wait for retracement up to the level
4. Enter short on bearish rejection candle close
5. Stop loss 10-15 pips above the level
6. Take profit at the next major auto-SR support below

The discipline that matters: prioritise the THICKEST lines (most touches). Thin (2-touch) lines have meaningfully lower hit rates. 4+ touches = high-edge zones.

Auto S/R vs Order Blocks

Both define horizontal S/R. Different methods.

Feature

Auto S/R

Order Blocks

Detection method

Multi-touch swing clustering

Hands-off horizontal S/R

Precision ICT entries

Zone width

Single line + tolerance

Single candle range

Verdict: Use Auto S/R for general structural levels; use Order Blocks for ICT-style precision entries. They’re complementary — both can run on the same chart.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Auto S/R indicator free?

Yes. Our FOB_AutoSR.ex4 is free below.

Does the indicator repaint?

No. Once a swing pivot is confirmed (5 bars on each side), it’s locked. Levels only update as new swings form.

How is auto-detection different from manual drawing?

Auto-detection captures TOUCHES but misses CONTEXT. Manual drawing lets you ignore old levels that no longer matter (post-major-move). Best practice: draw S/R manually on your primary chart, run auto-S/R on secondary timeframes for context.

What’s the best tolerance setting?

50 points on H1 EURUSD. Drop to 20 for scalping; raise to 100+ for daily charts. The right tolerance depends on the pair’s average true range.

Can I use this on MT5?

Yes. Our enhanced version supports both platforms.
