ICT (Inner Circle Trader) trading isn’t a single setup — it’s a 5-phase sequence that institutional algos repeat across every liquid market. Liquidity Grab → Change of Character → Retracement → Order Block Retest → FVG Entry. When all 5 phases line up, you have one of the highest-edge setups in modern technical trading.
This guide walks you through the complete ICT sequence with chart examples for each phase, the entry rules I run live, and the risk management framework that keeps the strategy profitable across the inevitable losing streaks.
The 5-Phase ICT Setup
- Phase 1: Liquidity — identify pools where retail stops cluster (equal swing extremes)
- Phase 2: Liquidity Grab — price sweeps the pool with a wick, closes back through the level
- Phase 3: Change of Character — price breaks the prior structural extreme against the existing trend
- Phase 4: Retracement to Order Block — price retraces to a fresh OB in the new direction
- Phase 5: FVG Entry — Fair Value Gap inside the OB provides precise entry trigger
Each phase confirms the previous one. Without the liquidity grab, the CHoCH is unreliable. Without the CHoCH, the OB retest lacks direction. Without the FVG inside the OB, you’re guessing at entry. The full sequence is the high-edge filter.
Full ICT Setup Walkthrough

The annotated chart above shows the complete sequence on a recent EURUSD H1 setup. Walk through each phase below as you reference the chart.
Phase 1: Liquidity
Open your H1 chart with the FOB_LiquidityZone indicator applied. The indicator marks two liquidity types:
- Buy-Side Liquidity (BSL) — gold lines above clusters of equal swing highs
- Sell-Side Liquidity (SSL) — blue lines below clusters of equal swing lows
These lines are where retail stops sit. BSL above resistance = where shorts have stops. SSL below support = where longs have stops. Institutions need this liquidity to fill their large positions, and they engineer price moves to grab it.
The setup begins when you have a clear, fresh liquidity pool that hasn’t been touched recently. Untouched pools are the magnets institutions target.
Phase 2: Liquidity Grab

The grab is a specific candle pattern: price sweeps the liquidity pool with a wick, but the candle closes BACK THROUGH the pool in the opposite direction. The wick took out stops; the close shows institutional reversal.
Critical distinction: a grab is a wick-through-then-back. A breakout is a body-through-and-continue. They look similar in real time but have opposite trade implications.
- Grab: wick exceeds liquidity pool, candle closes back inside → reversal trade setup
- Breakout: candle closes beyond the pool → don’t trade reversal, the new direction is established
Wait for the candle to close before classifying. False grabs (where the wick comes back but then price keeps going) happen — that’s why you wait for confirmation in later phases.
Phase 3: Change of Character (CHoCH)
After the liquidity grab, the next phase is structural confirmation. The Market Structure indicator (FOB_MarketStructure) draws CHoCH lines when price closes through the previous swing extreme AGAINST the existing trend.
If the trend was DOWN (LL+LH sequence) and price grabs sell-side liquidity then closes ABOVE the previous LH, that’s CHoCH up. Mirror for CHoCH down after BSL grab.
The CHoCH confirms institutional commitment to the new direction. Without CHoCH after a liquidity grab, the move is likely to fail (false reversal, price continues original trend).
Phase 4: Retracement to Order Block
After CHoCH, price typically retraces back to find a fresh order block in the NEW direction (the one institutions just confirmed).
Use FOB_OrderBlock to identify the fresh OB. After a CHoCH up, you’re looking for a fresh BULLISH OB above the swept low. After a CHoCH down, fresh BEARISH OB below the swept high.
Don’t enter blindly when price reaches the OB — wait for Phase 5.
Phase 5: Execution at FVG

Use FOB_FVG to identify Fair Value Gaps. The highest-confluence entries occur when an FVG sits INSIDE the order block zone. The FVG provides entry precision; the OB provides structural context.
Entry trigger: A bullish (or bearish) rejection candle prints inside the OB/FVG zone. Pin bar, engulfing, strong-close hammer all qualify.
Entry: On the close of the rejection candle.
Stop loss: Just beyond the liquidity-sweep extreme (the wick low for longs, wick high for shorts). This is typically 5-15 pips on H1 EURUSD.
Take profit:
– TP1: 1.5R (structural intermediate level)
– TP2: 2.5-3R (next major opposing structure)
– TP3 (optional): 4-5R (next liquidity pool in the opposite direction)
Risk Management
Position sizing: Risk 1% per trade. The 5-phase filter means setups are infrequent (1-3 per week per pair) but high-quality. You can afford to size standard.
News blackout: Skip ICT trades 30 minutes before/after high-impact news. The institutional algo that runs the ICT sequence isn’t active during news-driven moves.
Time stop: If the trade hasn’t moved meaningfully in 8-12 H1 bars, exit at break-even. The setup has lost edge.
Don’t add to losers. Defined-risk entry — stick to the original stop. If price moves against you, the OB is failing.
The Full Indicator Stack
Run all 4 indicators on your H1 chart:
- FOB_LiquidityZone — Phase 1 (identify pools)
- FOB_MarketStructure — Phase 3 (confirm CHoCH)
- FOB_OrderBlock — Phase 4 (find OB)
- FOB_FVG — Phase 5 (entry trigger)
Together this is the SMC pack — see Smart Money Concept MT4 for the bundled install.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Skipping phases. The 5-phase sequence works because each phase confirms the previous one. Trying to enter on just OB + FVG without liquidity + CHoCH context produces lower-quality setups.
Mistaking grabs for breakouts. A wick-through-and-back is a grab; a body-through-and-continue is a breakout. The difference is everything. Wait for the candle close before classifying.
Trading every CHoCH. CHoCH events without a preceding liquidity grab tend to fail. The grab provides the institutional motivation; without it, the structural break is weaker.
Stop too tight. Place stops just beyond the liquidity sweep extreme. Tighter stops get wicked out by normal volatility.
Holding losers. Defined risk = take the loss when it hits. Hoping for a turnaround is the path to blown accounts.
Frequently Asked Questions
What’s the win rate of the full ICT setup?
With proper 5-phase filtering, my testing on H1 EURUSD shows ~65% over 12 months. The trade frequency is low (1-3 setups per week per pair), but each is high quality.
Can the ICT strategy work without all 4 indicators?
You can identify the phases manually but it’s slower. The indicators surface the patterns automatically so you don’t miss setups during charting fatigue.
Best timeframe for ICT?
H1 is the workhorse. H4 produces fewer but higher-quality setups for swing traders. M15 is borderline — too noisy for the multi-phase confirmation.
Best pairs for ICT?
EURUSD, GBPUSD, USDJPY, XAUUSD, US30. Liquid markets where the institutional algos that run ICT-style setups are active.
Are these indicators free?
Yes — all 4 are free below as the SMC pack. No subscriptions, no premium tiers.
