The phrase “the market hunts your stops” sounds paranoid until you see it on a chart. Equal swing highs and equal swing lows are where retail traders cluster their stop losses (above resistance for shorts, below support for longs). Institutions know this and price often spikes through these clusters to grab the liquidity before reversing in the original direction.
This MT4 indicator detects those liquidity pools automatically. Below is the ICT framework around buy-side and sell-side liquidity, the stop-hunt reversal strategy I trade live, and how this pairs with order blocks for high-confluence entries.
What is a Liquidity Zone?
A liquidity zone is a cluster of 2+ swing highs (or swing lows) at approximately the same price. The institutional logic:
- Buy-side liquidity (BSL) — equal swing highs. Stop losses for SHORT positions sit just above. When price breaks through, those stops trigger as buy orders, providing liquidity for institutions to fill SHORT entries at better prices.
- Sell-side liquidity (SSL) — equal swing lows. Stop losses for LONG positions sit just below. Sweep through = sell orders triggered, providing liquidity for institutions to fill LONG entries.
The “stop hunt” pattern: price approaches the equal highs (or lows), spikes through them with a wick that takes out the stops, then reverses sharply. The wick = liquidity grab. The reversal = institutions filling their actual position now that they have the liquidity they needed.
ICT traders use liquidity zones as REVERSAL signals, not breakout signals. When you see a sweep of equal highs followed by a strong bearish close, that’s smart money completing a short entry — not a bullish breakout.
How Liquidity Zones Work on MT4
Our FOB_LiquidityZone.ex4 scans the last 200 bars (configurable), identifies all swing highs and lows, clusters them within tolerance (e.g., 30 points), and draws horizontal lines at clusters with 2+ touches. BSL is gold; SSL is deep sky blue.

Three patterns matter for forex traders.
The first is liquidity grab + reversal. The textbook setup. Price spikes through a liquidity pool with a wick, then reverses on the next 1-2 candles. Trade the reversal.
The second is liquidity grab without reversal. If price closes decisively beyond the pool (not just a wick), the move is genuine and the pool is consumed. Don’t fade — the new direction is established.
The third is liquidity stack confluence. Multiple liquidity pools in the same direction (e.g., 3 BSL pools above current price within 50 pips of each other) = magnet. Price tends to sweep all of them in one move before reversing.

Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Reveals the institutional stop-hunt pattern explicitly | Custom install required — not built into MT4 |
| Pairs with OBs and FVGs for full ICT framework | Requires patience — clean liquidity grabs are 1-3 per week per pair |
| Works on all forex pairs and timeframes | Distinguishing “grab + reverse” from “real break” requires reading the close, not just the wick |
| Free vs $50+ premium liquidity tools | Best on H1+ — too noisy on M1/M5 |

Trading Strategy: Liquidity Grab Reversal
The cleanest liquidity strategy. Best on H1 EURUSD, GBPUSD during London/NY sessions.
Setup: FOB_LiquidityZone + bullish/bearish bias from H4 trend.
Long Entry (sell-side liquidity grab):
1. H4 trend is up
2. On H1, identify a sell-side liquidity pool below current price (cluster of equal swing lows)
3. Wait for price to sweep below the pool with a wick (liquidity grab)
4. Critical: the closing candle MUST close back ABOVE the pool (not below)
5. Enter long on the close of the rejection candle
6. Stop loss 5-10 pips below the wick low
7. Take profit at next major resistance (1.5-3R)
Short Entry (buy-side liquidity grab):
1. H4 trend down
2. Buy-side liquidity pool above current price
3. Sweep with wick above pool
4. Closing candle closes back BELOW the pool
5. Enter short on rejection close
6. Stop loss above wick high
7. Take profit at next major support

The discipline that matters: distinguish a “grab” (wick through, body back) from a “break” (body through, no return). Body closes beyond the pool = genuine break, no reversal trade. Only wicks back into the pool = grab, take the reversal.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Liquidity Zone indicator free?
Yes. Our FOB_LiquidityZone.ex4 is free below.
Does the indicator repaint?
No. Liquidity pools are confirmed only after swings on each side are confirmed (5-bar lag).
How is this different from regular S/R?
Auto-S/R captures any multi-touch level. Liquidity Zones specifically focus on EQUAL swing extremes — the precise pattern where retail stops cluster. The narrower focus = higher signal quality for stop-hunt setups.
What’s the right tolerance setting?
30 points on H1 EURUSD. Tighter = catches only very tight equal highs/lows; looser = catches more pools but more false positives.
Can I use this on MT5?
Yes. Our enhanced version supports both platforms.
