Breaker Block Indicator MT4 – ICT Concept

A breaker block is what an order block becomes when it fails. The institutions defending the OB get overwhelmed, price breaks through, and the same zone — now from the other side — becomes opposite-polarity support. ICT teaches that breaker retests are some of the highest-edge entries in the framework because they confirm the regime change while still giving a defined-risk entry.

Below is the breaker block MT4 indicator that auto-detects polarity-flipped order blocks after Break of Structure, the retest strategy I trade live, and how it differs from a fresh order block.

What is a Breaker Block?

A breaker block is a 3-step pattern:

  1. An order block forms (last opposing candle before impulse)
  2. Price moves away from the OB, then comes back and BREAKS through it (Break of Structure / BOS)
  3. Price retraces back to the now-broken OB, where the zone acts as opposite-polarity S/R

For example: a bearish OB forms (last bullish candle before bearish impulse). Price falls, then rallies back UP and closes above the OB high (BOS). The OB is no longer bearish supply — it’s now bullish support. When price retraces down to retest, expect a bounce.

The institutional logic: when the OB gets violated, the institutions defending it stop out. Their positions flip — they’re now on the other side. When price returns to the zone, those flipped positions defend the new direction.

The “BOS confirmation” step is critical. Without a BOS, you don’t have a breaker — you just have a tested OB. Our indicator only flags zones where price has explicitly broken through.

How Breaker Blocks Work on MT4

Our FOB_BreakerBlock.ex4 scans the last 200 bars (configurable), identifies historical order blocks, then checks if price subsequently broke through them. Confirmed breakers are drawn as coloured rectangles in opposite polarity to the original OB.

Three patterns matter for forex traders.

The first is breaker retest. The cleanest setup. After BOS, wait for price to return to the breaker zone and trade the bounce in the new direction.

The second is breaker stack. Multiple breakers at different prices in the same direction = strong structural shift. If price has flipped 2-3 OBs in a row, the trend change is well-established.

The third is breaker + FVG confluence. A breaker block that aligns with a FVG at the same price = double-edge entry. The breaker confirms regime change; the FVG provides precise entry zone.

Key Features

  • Custom MT4 indicator (FOB_BreakerBlock.ex4)
  • Auto-detection of polarity-flipped order blocks after BOS
  • Configurable lookback (default 200 bars)
  • Configurable impulse threshold (ATR multiplier)
  • Bullish breakers (green) + bearish breakers (red)
  • Coloured rectangles extend forward to current price
  • Non-repainting once BOS is confirmed

Best Settings for Breaker Block Indicator

The defaults work for most pairs.

Use Case Lookback Impulse ATR Best Timeframe
Day Trading 200 1.5 H1
Swing 300 2.0 H4
Position 500 2.5 D1

Recommended starting point: H1 EURUSD with 200-bar lookback, 1.5x ATR threshold.

Pros and Cons

Pros Cons
Confirms regime change before entry — higher edge than fresh OBs Custom install required — not built into MT4
Defined risk (stop beyond breaker extreme) Less frequent than fresh OBs — patience required
Pairs with FVG and Market Structure for ICT confluence Requires understanding of BOS — less beginner-friendly
Works on all forex pairs and timeframes Best on H1+ — too noisy on M5 for retail traders

Trading Strategy: Breaker Retest

The cleanest breaker strategy. Best on H1 EURUSD, GBPUSD, gold during London/NY sessions.

Setup: FOB_BreakerBlock + 50 EMA on price.

Long Entry (bullish breaker retest):
1. H4 trend has just shifted from down to up (BOS confirmed visually or via market structure indicator)
2. On H1, identify a fresh bullish breaker (former bearish OB, now flipped to support)
3. Wait for price to retrace down to the breaker zone
4. Enter long when price prints a bullish rejection candle at the breaker
5. Stop loss 5-10 pips below the breaker low
6. Take profit at the next major resistance

Short Entry (bearish breaker retest):
1. H4 trend just shifted from up to down (BOS down)
2. Identify fresh bearish breaker (former bullish OB, now flipped to resistance)
3. Retracement up to breaker
4. Bearish rejection candle at breaker
5. Enter short on rejection close
6. Stop loss above breaker high
7. Take profit at next major support

The discipline that matters: only trade fresh breakers (first retest). Subsequent retests have meaningfully lower hit rates.

Breaker Block vs Order Block

Same source data; different state.

Feature Breaker Block Order Block
State Violated by BOS, polarity-flipped Fresh, untouched
Direction Opposite of original OB Same as institutional positioning
Trade context Trade WITH the new trend after BOS Trade with the original trend

Verdict: Use fresh OBs to trade established trends; use breakers to trade regime changes. Both are essential ICT tools.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Breaker Block indicator free?

Yes. Our FOB_BreakerBlock.ex4 is free below.

Does the indicator repaint?

No. Breakers are confirmed only after BOS occurs (price closes through the OB). Once confirmed, the breaker is locked.

What’s the difference between a breaker and a mitigation block?

Both involve OB violation. A “mitigation block” is a more general term — any OB that price has returned to. A “breaker block” specifically requires Break of Structure + polarity flip. Our indicator detects breakers strictly.

Best timeframe?

H1 and H4. Lower timeframes have too many false BOS events; daily is excellent for swing trades.

Can I use this on MT5?

Yes. Our enhanced version supports both platforms.
