Best MT4 Tutorials for Beginners (2026 Roadmap from Install to First Trade)

You opened MT4 for the first time and immediately got overwhelmed. Eight panels, dozens of menus, indicators, EAs, expert journals, MQL4 — where do you even start?

This roadmap fixes that. 10 free MT4 tutorials in the exact order a beginner should learn them, with a clear time investment per step. Follow the sequence and you’ll go from “what is this software” to running EAs on a VPS in about a week.

The Complete MT4 Beginner Roadmap

Each tutorial assumes you’ve completed the previous one. Skipping ahead works for some, but the order is designed to compound: each guide builds on skills you picked up earlier.

1. How to Install MetaTrader 4 Platform

Time: 10 minutes
Why first: every other tutorial assumes MT4 is installed and connected to a broker.

Covers Windows, Mac, iOS, and Android installation. Critical detail you can’t skip: MT4 is distributed by brokers, not MetaQuotes — you need to pick a broker first. The guide compares the major options.

2. How to Open MT4 Demo Account

Time: 5 minutes
Why second: never click “Buy” on a live account before you’ve practised on demo.

A demo account is free, takes 5 minutes to register, and gives you a fully functional MT4 with virtual money. Use it for at least 50 practice trades before risking a single real dollar.

3. How to Place a Trade on MT4

Time: 15 minutes
Why third: with MT4 installed and a demo account ready, this is the first hands-on tutorial.

Covers market orders, pending orders (Buy Limit, Sell Limit, Buy Stop, Sell Stop), stop loss, take profit, lot sizing formula, and how to modify or close positions. Don’t move on until you’ve placed at least 10 demo trades following the position-sizing formula.

4. How to Install Custom Indicators on MT4

Time: 5 minutes
Why fourth: installing custom indicators is the most-asked MT4 question. Master it once and you unlock the entire free indicator ecosystem.

Find your Data Folder, copy the .ex4 file to MQL4/Indicators, refresh Navigator, drag onto chart. Includes troubleshooting for the four most common “indicator doesn’t appear” causes.

5. MT4 Templates and Profiles Guide

Time: 10 minutes
Why fifth: stop rebuilding the same chart layout every time you open a new window.

Save your favourite chart with all its indicators as a template — every new chart inherits the layout. Profiles save your full multi-chart workspace. Five minutes invested here saves hours over the next year.

6. MT4 Keyboard Shortcuts Cheatsheet

Time: 10 minutes
Why sixth: with templates in place, hotkeys are the next productivity multiplier.

The 12 hotkeys every trader should memorise (F9, Ctrl+T, Ctrl+M, F11, etc.) plus the full reference for chart navigation, order placement, and indicator management.

7. MT4 Strategy Tester Guide

Time: 30 minutes
Why seventh: before you trade an EA live, you backtest it. This is the longest single tutorial because backtesting properly takes time to internalise.

Covers modelling quality (always 99%), history data download (M1 mandatory), reading the report, and the most common backtest mistakes. If you only learn one thing: 99% modelling quality is the only modelling quality that matters.

8. MT4 Mobile App Setup Guide

Time: 8 minutes
Why eighth: push notifications from your custom indicators / EAs to your phone. Even if you don’t trade from mobile, alert delivery is invaluable.

Install on iOS or Android, log in to the same account as desktop, get the MetaQuotes ID, paste it into MT4 desktop’s Notifications settings. Now your indicator’s SendNotification() call wakes up your phone.

9. MT4 VPS Setup Guide

Time: 15 minutes
Why ninth: if you plan to run EAs live, you need 24/5 uptime. A VPS is the only practical way to achieve it.

Covers free broker VPS qualifying conditions, paid forex-specialised VPS options, generic cloud (Vultr, AWS), RDP connection, MT4 install on the VPS, and EA file transfer.

10. MT4 vs MT5 Comparison

Time: 10 minutes
Why tenth (and last): by now you understand MT4 well enough to evaluate whether MT5 is worth a switch.

Side-by-side comparison covering speed, asset coverage, order types, EA library, broker support. Spoiler: for retail forex in 2026, MT4 still wins for most beginners. MT5 makes sense if you trade multi-asset or do serious algo development.

Time Investment Per Tutorial

The full roadmap takes about 2 hours of reading plus 20-50 hours of demo practice before you should consider going live.

2 Demo account 5 min Already done
3 Place a trade 15 min 10+ demo trades

Beginner Mistakes to Avoid

After helping hundreds of new traders through this exact roadmap, the same mistakes keep coming up:

  • Going live too early. A week of demo profitability is meaningless. Aim for 3 months of consistent demo profit before risking real capital.
  • Position sizing without the formula. Trading 0.5 lots on a $1,000 account because “it feels right” is how accounts blow up. Always calculate: Lots = (Balance × Risk_%) / (Stop_Pips × Pip_Value).
  • Indicator hoarding. Loading 8 indicators on a single chart paralyses decision-making. Three indicators max — one for trend, one for momentum, one for entry timing.
  • Skipping backtests. “I read good things about this EA” is not a strategy. Always backtest at 99% modelling quality for at least 1 year before forward-testing on demo.
  • Ignoring the journal. Every demo trade is a data point. Track entries, exits, P&L, and reason in a spreadsheet. Patterns emerge after 50 trades that no course can teach you.

What Comes After the Roadmap

Once you’ve worked through the 10 tutorials, the next step depends on your goals:

  • Want to manual trade? Start with our free MT4 trend indicators — pick 1-2 that match your style and practice on demo for 50+ trades.
  • Want to run EAs? Pair the Strategy Tester guide with the VPS setup — backtest, forward-test on demo, then deploy to VPS.
  • Want to learn coding? MT4 uses MQL4. Open MetaEditor (F4 in MT4) and start with the built-in MA Cross EA template. Most coding tutorials online are free.
  • Want to compare brokers? Open demo accounts at 2-3 brokers using our demo account guide and run the same setups in parallel via multi-account mode.
