The Momentum indicator is the oldest and most direct momentum oscillator on MT4. It calculates the simple ratio between current price and price N periods ago, then plots that as a line oscillating around 100. Above 100 = upward momentum, below 100 = downward. That’s the entire mechanic — and despite the simplicity, it’s still useful as a confirmation tool I add alongside more sophisticated oscillators.
What is the Momentum Indicator?
The Momentum oscillator was one of the first technical indicators applied to financial markets. It compares the current close to the close N periods earlier (default 14 in MT4). The output is a single line oscillating around 100 — the dividing point between bullish and bearish momentum.
It’s deliberately simple. There’s no smoothing, no signal line, no advanced math — just current price divided by past price, multiplied by 100. The result is a raw momentum read that’s easy to interpret but noisier than smoothed alternatives like RSI or MACD.
How Momentum Works on MT4
On MT4, Momentum plots in a sub-window with a single line and a horizontal 100 reference. Three signals matter.

The first is the 100-line cross. Crossing above 100 = upward momentum has taken over; below 100 = downward momentum has taken over. This is the cleanest trend-confirmation use of Momentum.
The second is divergence. Price higher highs while Momentum prints lower highs (bearish divergence) signals fading momentum despite price extension. Similar to RSI divergence in concept, simpler line in practice.
The third is extreme readings — Momentum doesn’t have fixed OB/OS thresholds, but readings well above or below the typical historical range for an instrument indicate exhausted momentum. You’ll need to eyeball this against the chart’s own history.
Key Features
- Built into MT4 – Insert > Indicators > Oscillators > Momentum
- Single-line oscillator centred on 100
- No smoothing – shows raw momentum
- Non-repainting once candles close
- Configurable period (default 14)
- Lightweight, no system overhead
Best Settings for Momentum
Momentum is sensitive to the period setting. A short period (5-9) gives you fast turns but lots of noise; a longer period (20+) smooths everything but lags badly.
| Parameter | Scalping (M1-M5) | Day Trading (M15-H1) | Swing Trading (H4-D1) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Period | 7 | 14 | 21 |
| Reference Level | 100 | 100 | 100 |
| Applied Price | Close | Close | Close |
Recommended starting point: Period 14 with 100 reference on H1, paired with a faster oscillator (RSI or Stochastic) for entry timing.
Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Direct momentum read – no smoothing or interpretation layer | Noisier than smoothed alternatives like RSI or MACD |
| Works equally well on forex, gold, indices | No fixed OB/OS levels – requires chart-by-chart calibration |
| Built into MT4, non-repainting, easy to backtest | Simple math means fewer interpretation layers vs richer oscillators |
| Lightweight, runs alongside any other indicator | Best as a confirmation tool, not a primary signal generator |

Trading Strategy: Momentum 100-Line Cross with EMA Filter
This is the strategy I use Momentum for – a clean trend confirmation rule.
Setup: Momentum(14) with 100 reference. 50 EMA on the same chart.
Buy Signal:
1. Price is above the 50 EMA (uptrend)
2. Momentum crosses above 100 from below
3. Enter long on the close of the breakout candle
Sell Signal:
1. Price is below the 50 EMA (downtrend)
2. Momentum crosses below 100 from above
3. Enter short on the close of the breakout candle
Stop Loss: Beyond the recent swing extreme.
Take Profit: 1:2 R:R or trail by the 50 EMA.

The EMA filter is essential – without it, Momentum 100-line crosses fire too often during ranging markets.
Momentum vs ROC (Rate of Change)
Both calculate the same fundamental thing – current price relative to price N periods ago. Momentum centres on 100 (current/past × 100); ROC centres on 0 ((current-past)/past × 100). They produce identical signals just on different scales. Most traders pick one and stick with it – I prefer Momentum for the simplicity of the 100 line.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Momentum indicator free?
Yes. Built into MT4 and the enhanced version is also free.
Does Momentum repaint?
No. Locks in once the candle closes.
What is the best Momentum setting?
Period 14 with the 100 reference line is the universal default. Faster (7-9) for scalping, slower (21+) for swing.
Momentum vs RSI – which is better?
RSI is smoother and has divergence signals; Momentum is rawer and faster. Use RSI as a primary momentum read, Momentum as a confirmation.
Can I use Momentum on MT5?
Yes. Built into MT5 with identical behaviour.
