If you trade forex on MT4 and you only run one oscillator on your chart, the Relative Strength Index is the one I’d pick. It tells me three things at a glance — momentum, exhaustion, and the divergences that often precede the cleanest reversals. After 16 years of testing oscillators against live markets, RSI is still the first one I add to a fresh template.
In this guide I’ll walk through how I actually use the RSI on MT4, the settings I run on different timeframes, and the divergence-confirmation rule that filters out most of the false signals beginners get burned by.
What is the RSI Indicator?
The Relative Strength Index is a momentum oscillator developed by J. Welles Wilder Jr. in 1978. It measures the speed and magnitude of recent price changes on a 0-to-100 scale. Readings above 70 are traditionally considered overbought; readings below 30 are oversold.
The maths behind it averages up-day gains against down-day losses over a defined period (default 14). The result is a smooth line that oscillates inside a fixed band — easy to read, easy to compare across markets and timeframes.
What makes RSI different from raw momentum indicators is that bounded scale. A reading of 75 on EURUSD means the same thing as 75 on USDJPY or 75 on XAUUSD: the recent up-move has been one-sided. That comparability is why institutional desks still rely on it more than four decades after Wilder published the original formula.
How RSI Works on MT4
On MetaTrader 4, the RSI plots in a separate sub-window beneath your price chart. Most traders spot four useful patterns from the line.

The first is the overbought/oversold dip. When RSI prints above 70 and rolls over, momentum is exhausted upward — usually a short-term sell setup in ranging conditions. Below 30 and turning up, the opposite. This is the textbook reading and it works beautifully when the higher timeframe is sideways. It fails badly when the market is trending strongly, which is the trap most new traders fall into.
The second is the trend filter. In a strong uptrend, RSI rarely drops below 40 — it bounces off 40-50 like dynamic support. In a strong downtrend, it ceilings around 50-60. Once you start watching this, you’ll see why “buy when RSI is 30” gets stopped out so often: in a downtrend the index can stay below 50 for weeks.
The third — and the one that actually pays my rent — is divergence. Bearish divergence is price making a higher high while RSI prints a lower high. Bullish divergence is the inverse. Divergence on a 14-period RSI signals that the move’s underlying momentum is weakening even though price is still extending. I treat it as a “be ready to reverse” signal, not a market order, but it has the highest hit rate of any RSI signal I track.
The fourth is the 50-line cross. RSI crossing 50 from below is a soft trend-up confirmation. From above to below, soft trend-down. Combined with a moving average, it makes a decent rule-based entry filter.
Key Features
- Built into MT4 by default — Insert > Indicators > Oscillators > Relative Strength Index
- Bounded scale (0-100) makes signals comparable across all instruments
- Non-repainting: once a candle closes, the RSI value for that candle is locked
- Works on any timeframe from M1 to MN — best results in my testing on H1 and H4
- Configurable period and applied price (Close is the standard)
- Lightweight on system resources, no impact on chart performance
Best Settings for RSI Indicator
The default 14-period setting is the right starting point for almost everyone. The 70/30 levels are negotiable depending on how aggressive you trade.
| Parameter | Scalping (M1-M5) | Day Trading (M15-H1) | Swing Trading (H4-D1) |
|---|---|---|---|
| RSI Period | 7 | 14 | 14 or 21 |
| Overbought Level | 80 | 70 | 70 |
| Oversold Level | 20 | 30 | 30 |
| Applied Price | Close | Close | Close |
The faster RSI(7) on M1 / M5 charts catches scalp-grade reversals that a 14-period would miss, but it also produces more false signals. I bump the OB/OS levels to 80/20 on those timeframes specifically to filter out the noise. On H1 swing setups the standard 14 with 70/30 is what I run.
Recommended starting point: RSI(14) with 70/30 levels on the H1 chart. Master that combination first; once you can read it cleanly, then adapt it down to scalping or up to weekly swing.
Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Bounded 0-100 scale — easy to interpret across pairs and timeframes | Generates false reversal signals during strong trends |
| Non-repainting once candles close, ideal for backtesting | Lagging by nature — can’t predict the start of a new move, only confirm it |
| Divergence patterns offer some of the highest-quality reversal signals in technical analysis | Default 70/30 levels rarely fit aggressive or scalping trading without adjustment |
| Works equally well as a trend filter, momentum gauge, and divergence detector | Without higher-timeframe context, OB/OS readings are easy to misuse |
How to Install RSI Indicator on MT4
The standard RSI ships inside MT4. Our enhanced version (multi-timeframe, divergence highlighting, alerts) you’ll need to install manually — see the dedicated install custom indicators on MT4 tutorial if you’ve never done it before.
Step 1: Open MT4 and select the chart you want to apply RSI to.
Step 2: Click Insert in the top menu, then Indicators > Oscillators > Relative Strength Index.

Step 3: In the popup, set Period to 14, Apply to Close, and pick a colour for the line. Add horizontal levels at 70 and 30 in the Levels tab.
Step 4: Click OK. RSI now appears in a separate sub-window below price.
Step 5: To save this configuration, right-click the chart > Template > Save Template as “RSI-H1” or similar.
Trading Strategy Using RSI Divergence
This is the strategy I trust most for catching turning points. Works best on H1 and H4 EURUSD, GBPUSD, and gold (XAUUSD).
Setup: RSI(14) with levels at 70 and 30. Add a 50 EMA for trend context.
Bullish Reversal Signal:
1. Price makes a lower low on the chart
2. RSI makes a HIGHER low at the same time (this is the bullish divergence)
3. RSI is below 30 (oversold confirmation, optional but improves win rate)
4. Enter long when the next candle closes above the previous bar’s high
Bearish Reversal Signal:
1. Price makes a higher high
2. RSI makes a LOWER high (bearish divergence)
3. RSI is above 70 (overbought)
4. Enter short when the next candle closes below the previous bar’s low
Stop Loss: Just beyond the recent swing extreme that formed the divergence (10-30 pips on H1, larger on H4).
Take Profit: Target the most recent opposing structure (previous swing high for longs, previous swing low for shorts), or trail with a 50 EMA cross.

The key discipline: don’t take divergence signals against the higher-timeframe trend. If the daily is bullish, only trade bullish divergences on H1/H4. Counter-trend divergence trades win individually but lose on average. I learned that the expensive way.
RSI vs Stochastic Oscillator
Both are bounded oscillators in the 0-100 range. The difference matters for what you’re trying to read.
| Feature | RSI | Stochastic |
|---|---|---|
| Primary signal | Momentum and divergence | Position of close within recent range |
| OB/OS thresholds | 70 / 30 standard | 80 / 20 standard |
| Sensitivity | Smoother, fewer signals | More sensitive, more signals |
| Best market | Trending and ranging | Ranging |
| Lines | Single line | Two lines (%K and %D) |
Verdict: Use RSI when you want a clean, slower momentum read with the strongest divergence signals. Switch to Stochastic when you’re scalping ranges and need faster overbought/oversold flips. I run both on different chart templates depending on my trading style for the day.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the RSI indicator free?
Yes. The standard RSI is built into every copy of MetaTrader 4. Our enhanced version with multi-timeframe display, divergence detection, and alerts is also free — download below.
Does the RSI indicator repaint?
No. Once a candle closes, the RSI value for that bar is fixed permanently. The line you see on closed candles is exactly what would have been visible in real time.
What is the best RSI setting for forex?
For most traders on most timeframes, the default 14-period RSI with 70/30 levels is the right setting. Drop to RSI(7) with 80/20 levels if you scalp on M1-M5; bump to RSI(21) for weekly swing setups. Don’t constantly change settings — pick one and learn to read it cleanly first.
What does RSI 50 mean?
The 50 line is the midpoint of the RSI range. Crossing 50 from below is a soft signal that buying momentum has overtaken selling. Crossing from above is the opposite. Many trend traders use the 50 line instead of the 70/30 thresholds.
Can I use RSI on MT5?
Yes. RSI is built into MT5 with the same parameters and behaviour. Our enhanced version is available for both platforms.
