The Volume Weighted MACD takes the most familiar oscillator on MT4 and rebuilds it with one critical change: the moving averages aren’t time-weighted, they’re volume-weighted. That single substitution means the histogram bars and signal line now respond to where actual market participation is, not just where price is moving.
The result: in high-volume sessions, signal crosses get sharper and histogram expansion is more pronounced. In low-volume periods, the indicator stays calm rather than firing on noise. Below is exactly how I run VW-MACD, the histogram + signal-cross strategy, and how it compares to the standard MACD.
What is the Volume Weighted MACD?
The standard MACD is calculated as:
MACD = EMA(price, 12) − EMA(price, 26)
Signal = EMA(MACD, 9)
Histogram = MACD − Signal
The Volume Weighted MACD swaps the standard EMAs for volume-weighted EMAs. Each bar’s contribution to the moving average is weighted by its volume — so high-volume bars dominate the average and low-volume bars contribute less.
The mathematical effect is that VW-MACD becomes more responsive to high-conviction price moves and less responsive to low-volume drift. Visually it looks like a standard MACD but with cleaner crosses during active sessions and quieter behaviour during the Asian midnight chop.
How VW-MACD Works on MT4
On MT4, VW-MACD plots in a separate sub-window with the same components as standard MACD: histogram, MACD line, signal line, zero line.

Three patterns matter for forex traders.
The first is signal-line cross. VW-MACD crossing above its signal line is a bullish trigger; below is bearish. The crosses are sharper than standard MACD because volume weighting amplifies the conviction behind each move.
The second is histogram expansion. When the histogram bars get larger in absolute size, momentum is accelerating. Expansion in the same direction as your trade is confirmation; expansion against you is a warning to consider exit.
The third is divergence. VW-MACD divergence with price often leads standard MACD divergence by 1-2 bars on H1 because the volume weighting picks up institutional positioning earlier.

Best Settings for VW-MACD Indicator
The 12/26/9 default works well. Adjust for trading style.
| Use Case | Fast | Slow | Signal |
|---|---|---|---|
| Scalping | 5 | 13 | 5 |
| Day Trading | 12 | 26 | 9 |
| Swing Trading | 19 | 39 | 9 |
Recommended starting point: 12/26/9 on H1 EURUSD with a 50 EMA on price. Same setup as standard MACD but with the volume-weighted version.
Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Sharper signal crosses during active sessions vs standard MACD | Forex tick volume is approximate |
| Quieter during low-volume periods — fewer false signals | Custom install — not built into MT4 |
| Familiar MACD interface — no new vocabulary to learn | Behaves identically to MACD when volume is uniform |
| Histogram divergence reads lead standard MACD by 1-2 bars | Less popular than standard MACD — fewer existing strategies online |

Trading Strategy: Signal Cross + Histogram Confirmation
The cleanest VW-MACD strategy. Best on H1 EURUSD, GBPUSD, gold during London/NY sessions.
Setup: VW-MACD 12/26/9 + 50 EMA on price.
Long Entry:
1. Price above the 50 EMA on H4
2. On H1, VW-MACD crosses above its signal line
3. Histogram begins expanding green (above zero or moving up from below)
4. Enter long on the close of the cross candle
5. Stop loss below the most recent swing low (typically 25-40 pips on H1 EURUSD)
Short Entry:
1. Price below H4 50 EMA
2. VW-MACD crosses below signal
3. Histogram expanding red
4. Enter short on cross close
5. Stop loss above the most recent swing high
Take Profit: Target the most recent opposing structure. Trail with the 50 EMA after 1.5R.

The discipline that matters: skip crosses where the histogram doesn’t expand. Cross + flat histogram = weak signal that often whipsaws. Cross + clear expansion = the kind of trade that works.
VW-MACD vs Standard MACD
Same logic, different EMA inputs.
| Feature | VW-MACD | Standard MACD |
|---|---|---|
| EMA type | Volume-weighted | Time-weighted |
| Behaviour in low-volume periods | Quieter, fewer signals | Same as in high-volume periods |
| Behaviour in high-volume sessions | Sharper crosses + expansion | Identical to other periods |
| Best use | Volume-aware momentum trading | Pure price-momentum trading |
Verdict: Use VW-MACD when you want momentum signals filtered by participation. Use standard MACD when you don’t trust your broker’s tick-volume feed.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the VW-MACD indicator free?
Yes. Our FOB_VWMACD.ex4 is free below.
Does VW-MACD repaint?
No. All values are locked once each bar closes.
Why does VW-MACD look similar to standard MACD?
On uniform-volume periods, the two are nearly identical. The differences emerge in high-volume sessions (London/NY open) and low-volume ones (Asian midnight) where the volume weighting genuinely changes behaviour.
What’s the best timeframe for VW-MACD?
H1 and H4 give the cleanest reads, same as standard MACD.
Can I use VW-MACD on MT5?
Yes. Our enhanced version supports both platforms.
