The Moving Average and MACD sit on almost every forex trader’s chart, yet most traders never stop to ask which one actually earns its screen space. Both are trend indicators built from moving average math, but they answer different questions about price – and picking the right one (or knowing when to run both) can sharpen your entries, cut lag, and reduce false signals.

This head-to-head comparison breaks down the moving average vs MACD debate across five critical categories so you can decide which indicator fits your MT4 setup.

Quick Verdict

Overall Winner: MACD – The MACD packs trend direction and momentum into one indicator window, giving it an edge for most active trading styles. It produces faster, more actionable signals than a standard Moving Average crossover.

Best for beginners? Moving Average – its visual simplicity is unmatched.
Best for scalping? MACD – histogram momentum shifts appear before full MA crossovers.
Best for swing trading? Tie – a 50/200 EMA combo rivals MACD on daily charts.

Moving Average Overview

The Moving Average is the foundation of almost every trend-following system in forex. It calculates the average closing price over a set number of bars and plots the result directly on the price chart, creating a smooth line that reveals the underlying trend direction.

Traders use MAs in three main ways: as a dynamic support/resistance level (price bouncing off the 50 or 200 EMA), as a trend filter (only taking longs above the MA, shorts below), and as a crossover signal (fast MA crossing slow MA). The Simple Moving Average (SMA) weights all bars equally, while the Exponential Moving Average (EMA) gives more weight to recent price, making it faster to react.

Key strengths: dead-simple to read, works on any timeframe, doubles as support and resistance, and forms the backbone of countless strategies from institutional to retail.

Key weaknesses: inherently lagging – the longer the period, the greater the delay. In sideways markets, crossover signals produce frequent whipsaws that erode accounts. A standalone MA offers no momentum data, so you cannot gauge the strength behind a move.

MACD Overview

The MACD (Moving Average Convergence Divergence) is an oscillator derived from two exponential moving averages – by default the 12 EMA and 26 EMA. The MACD line plots the difference between these two EMAs, a 9-period signal line smooths that difference, and the histogram visualises the gap between the MACD line and the signal line.

Traders use the MACD for crossover signals (MACD crossing the signal line), zero-line crosses (confirming trend direction), histogram momentum reads (bars growing or shrinking to gauge acceleration), and divergence (price making new highs while MACD makes lower highs, signalling potential reversals).

Key strengths: combines trend and momentum in one window, histogram provides early warning before full crossovers occur, divergence signals catch reversals that MAs miss entirely, and default settings (12, 26, 9) work reliably across major pairs without constant tweaking.

Key weaknesses: displayed in a separate window so it does not provide visual support/resistance levels on the price chart. It can lag in fast-moving breakout conditions, and in choppy, low-volatility markets the MACD line oscillates around zero producing clusters of false crossovers.

Feature-by-Feature Comparison

1. Signal Accuracy

The Moving Average crossover (e.g., 20 EMA crossing 50 EMA) generates clear buy and sell signals, but accuracy suffers in ranging conditions where price chops back and forth across both lines. In trending markets, MA crossovers catch the bulk of a move but enter late and exit late.

MACD edges ahead here because the histogram acts as an early filter. When the histogram starts shrinking before a full crossover, traders get a heads-up that momentum is fading. MACD divergence also catches reversals that MA crossovers miss completely – if price prints a higher high but the MACD prints a lower high, that warning has no MA equivalent.

Winner: MACD – The histogram and divergence capabilities give it a measurable accuracy advantage, particularly in transitional markets shifting from trend to range.

2. Ease of Use

Moving Average wins this category outright. You add it to your chart, pick a period, and the line appears directly on price. Trend direction is instantly visible: price above the MA means bullish, price below means bearish. There is essentially one component to watch.

MACD requires interpreting three elements (MACD line, signal line, histogram) displayed in a separate sub-window. Beginners often confuse the MACD line with the signal line, misread histogram direction, or struggle to connect what they see in the oscillator window with price action above.

Winner: Moving Average – Nothing beats a single line overlaid on price for immediate clarity. A new trader can read MA trend direction within minutes of opening MT4.

3. Versatility

Both indicators are versatile, but they serve versatility in different dimensions. The Moving Average doubles as a trend filter, signal generator, and dynamic support/resistance level. Institutional traders watch the 50 and 200 period MAs, giving those levels genuine market significance where orders cluster.

MACD offers trend direction, momentum strength, entry timing, and divergence detection – four analytical dimensions from a single tool. However, it cannot function as on-chart support/resistance because it lives in a separate window.

Winner: Tie – MA wins for on-chart versatility and price-level significance. MACD wins for analytical depth. The category depends on what you value more in your strategy.

4. Speed (Responsiveness)

Signal speed matters most to scalpers and short-term day traders. A standard 20/50 EMA crossover can lag several bars behind a trend shift because both averages need time to converge and cross. Shortening the periods (e.g., 5/13 EMA) speeds things up but multiplies false signals.

MACD detects momentum changes earlier because the MACD line measures the rate of convergence between its two underlying EMAs. The histogram, in particular, starts declining before the full MACD/signal crossover, and well before a traditional MA crossover would trigger. This gives MACD traders an actionable lead of 1-3 bars on typical H1 charts.

Winner: MACD – The histogram provides the earliest actionable momentum signal available from standard MT4 indicators, consistently leading MA crossovers.

5. Alert Capability

Out of the box, neither the built-in Moving Average nor the built-in MACD on MT4 includes a native alert system. Both require either a custom indicator version with alert functionality or an Expert Advisor (EA) that monitors the indicator values and triggers pop-up, email, or push notifications.

However, custom MACD alert indicators are more widely available in the MQL5 community and tend to offer richer alert conditions (crossover alerts, zero-line cross alerts, histogram direction change alerts, divergence alerts). Custom MA alert indicators typically only cover price-cross-MA and MA-cross-MA conditions.

Winner: MACD (marginal) – More alert conditions are possible due to the indicator’s multiple signal types, and the MQL5 community offers more ready-made MACD alert tools.

When to Use Moving Average

Choose the Moving Average when your strategy fits these scenarios:

Trend filtering – You need a simple rule to stay on the right side of the market (e.g., only take longs when price is above the 200 EMA).

Support and resistance trading – You trade bounces off dynamic levels and want a line that institutional traders also watch.

Swing trading on daily charts – The 50/200 EMA golden cross and death cross remain among the most reliable long-term signals in forex.

Beginner learning – You are still building screen time and need an indicator you can understand fully before adding complexity.

Multi-indicator stacks – You want a clean trend filter that works underneath other signal indicators without cluttering the sub-window.

When to Use MACD

Choose the MACD when your strategy fits these scenarios:

Momentum confirmation – You need to verify that a trend move has genuine momentum behind it, not just a price spike.

Intraday trading (M15 to H4) – MACD crossovers and histogram shifts provide actionable entries on shorter timeframes where MA crossovers lag too much.

Divergence trading – You actively look for bullish and bearish divergence setups to catch reversals. Moving Averages cannot do this.

Entry timing – You have already established trend direction (via price action or another indicator) and need the MACD to time precise entries within that trend.

Ranging market warning – When the MACD line flatlines near zero with tiny histogram bars, it signals low momentum and warns you to stay out, avoiding the whipsaws that plague MA crossover systems.

Can You Use Both Together?

Yes – and this is arguably the strongest setup either indicator offers. Combining MA and MACD removes the biggest weaknesses of each:

The MA + MACD Dual-Confirmation Strategy:

Apply the 50 EMA to your price chart as a trend filter.

Apply the MACD (12, 26, 9) in the sub-window for entry timing.

For a buy signal: price must be above the 50 EMA (trend is bullish) and the MACD line must cross above the signal line and the histogram must print a green bar. All three conditions must align.

For a sell signal: price must be below the 50 EMA (trend is bearish) and the MACD line must cross below the signal line and the histogram must print a red bar.

Stop loss: Place below the most recent swing low (for buys) or above the most recent swing high (for sells).

Exit: When the MACD histogram starts shrinking against your position or price closes back beyond the 50 EMA.

This dual-confirmation approach filters out the majority of false signals that either indicator generates alone. The MA keeps you from taking MACD crossovers against the prevailing trend, while the MACD prevents you from entering early MA signals that lack momentum support.

Best timeframes for the combo: H1 and H4 on major pairs (EURUSD, GBPUSD, USDJPY).

Frequently Asked Questions

Is MACD better than Moving Average for forex trading?

MACD is generally more informative because it combines trend direction with momentum data in a single indicator. However, Moving Average is simpler to read and works better for identifying support/resistance zones. The best choice depends on your trading style – MACD suits active traders who want momentum confirmation, while MA suits trend-followers who prefer clean chart analysis.

Can I use Moving Average and MACD together on MT4?

Yes, combining both is one of the most effective trend-trading setups. Use the Moving Average (such as the 50 EMA) to define trend direction, then use the MACD crossover and histogram to time your entries. This dual-confirmation approach filters out many false signals that either indicator produces alone.

Which indicator gives faster signals – MA or MACD?

MACD typically produces signals faster than a standard Moving Average crossover because the MACD line reacts to the convergence and divergence of two EMAs before an actual crossover occurs. A short-period EMA (e.g., 9 EMA) can match MACD speed, but it will produce significantly more false signals.

What are the best Moving Average settings for comparing with MACD?

The most common Moving Average setup used alongside MACD is the 50 EMA for trend direction and the 200 EMA for long-term bias. The standard MACD settings (12, 26, 9) complement these MAs well. Some traders also use a 20 EMA as a dynamic support/resistance level while relying on MACD for entry timing.

Do Moving Average and MACD repaint on MT4?

No, neither the standard Moving Average nor the standard MACD indicator repaints on MT4. Both calculate their values from closed candle data, so once a bar closes, the plotted value is fixed. This makes both indicators reliable for backtesting and live trading decisions.

Final Thoughts

The moving average vs MACD debate does not have a universal winner. MACD takes the edge for most active traders because it delivers trend, momentum, and divergence data from one indicator. Moving Average remains the better choice for traders who value simplicity, on-chart support/resistance, and a clean visual read of trend direction.

The smartest approach is to stop treating them as competitors. Use the Moving Average to define what the trend is, then use the MACD to decide when to enter. That combination – simple trend filter plus momentum timer – eliminates the biggest weakness of each indicator and produces higher-quality trade signals than either one alone.

Ichimoku and Supertrend are two of the most popular trend indicators loaded onto MT4 charts every day, yet they approach trend-following from completely different angles. One gives you a full market dashboard. The other gives you a single clean line. Choosing between them can genuinely change your results.

I have traded with both for years across multiple pairs and timeframes. This comparison breaks down exactly where each indicator excels, where it falls short, and which one you should choose based on how you actually trade.

Quick Verdict

Choose Ichimoku Cloud if you trade higher timeframes (H4, Daily, Weekly), want a complete trend system in one indicator, and are comfortable reading multiple components on your chart.

Choose Supertrend if you prefer clean, binary buy/sell signals, trade intraday on lower timeframes, or want a no-fuss trend filter you can add to an existing strategy.

Best approach: Use both. Ichimoku on a higher timeframe sets the directional bias, and Supertrend on a lower timeframe times your entries.

Ichimoku Cloud Overview

The Ichimoku Kinko Hyo — often shortened to Ichimoku Cloud — is a comprehensive trend indicator developed by Japanese journalist Goichi Hosoda in the late 1960s. Unlike most indicators that measure a single variable, Ichimoku packs five distinct components into one overlay:

Tenkan-sen (Conversion Line): The midpoint of the highest high and lowest low over the last 9 periods. Acts as a fast-moving signal line.

Kijun-sen (Base Line): Same calculation over 26 periods. Serves as a medium-term trend gauge and dynamic support/resistance.

Senkou Span A: The midpoint between Tenkan-sen and Kijun-sen, plotted 26 periods ahead. Forms one edge of the cloud.

Senkou Span B: The midpoint of the highest high and lowest low over 52 periods, plotted 26 periods ahead. Forms the other edge.

Chikou Span (Lagging Span): The current close plotted 26 periods back. Confirms trend direction by comparing current price to past price.

The shaded area between Senkou Span A and Senkou Span B creates the Kumo (cloud), which is the heart of the system. When price is above the cloud, the trend is bullish. Below the cloud, bearish. Inside the cloud, the market is in transition.

The real power of Ichimoku is that you get trend direction, momentum, support/resistance levels, and future projections from a single indicator. No other standard MT4 tool does this.

For the full setup guide and TK Cross strategy, see our Ichimoku Cloud Indicator MT4 review.

Supertrend Overview

Supertrend takes the opposite approach. Instead of five lines and a cloud, it plots a single dynamic line that follows price and flips color when the trend reverses.

Under the hood, Supertrend is built on the Average True Range (ATR). It calculates ATR over a set period (default 10), multiplies it by a factor (default 3.0), and then adds or subtracts that value from the median price. The result is a trailing stop-style line that:

Turns green (or blue, depending on your color scheme) and sits below price during uptrends

Turns red and sits above price during downtrends

Flips only when price closes beyond the opposite band

The signal is binary. Green line below price means buy or hold long. Red line above price means sell or hold short. There is no ambiguity.

Supertrend’s ATR foundation means it automatically adjusts to the market’s current volatility. In choppy, low-volatility conditions, the line tightens. In fast-moving trending markets, it widens to avoid premature stops.

Head-to-Head: 5 Feature Comparisons

1. Signal Clarity

Supertrend wins.

With Supertrend, there is exactly one thing to watch: did the line change color? If it flipped from red to green, that is a buy signal. Green to red, sell. Even a first-week trader can read it in seconds.

Ichimoku requires you to interpret relationships between multiple lines. A standard bullish signal needs price above the cloud, Tenkan-sen above Kijun-sen, Chikou Span above past price, and ideally a green (bullish) cloud ahead. That is four conditions you are juggling at once.

If signal clarity matters to your workflow, Supertrend is the obvious choice.

2. Depth of Market Information

Ichimoku wins.

This is where Ichimoku earns its reputation. From a single indicator, you can determine:

Trend direction (price vs. cloud position)

Trend strength (thickness of the cloud)

Momentum (TK cross angle and spacing)

Support and resistance (cloud edges, Kijun-sen)

Future sentiment (projected cloud shape 26 bars ahead)

Supertrend tells you one thing: the current trend direction. It says nothing about where support sits, how strong the momentum is, or what might happen 26 bars from now.

If you want a complete picture from one indicator, Ichimoku is unmatched on MT4.

3. Responsiveness to Trend Changes

Supertrend wins.

Supertrend typically catches trend reversals faster because it reacts directly to ATR-based volatility breaks. When price punches through the ATR band, the signal flips immediately on the next candle close.

Ichimoku’s trend reversal confirmation is slower by design. You often need to wait for price to clear the entire cloud, for the TK cross to occur, and for the Chikou Span to confirm. On a Daily chart, this can mean entering a trend several candles after it has already begun.

The trade-off is that Supertrend’s faster signals also produce more whipsaws in ranging conditions, while Ichimoku’s slower confirmation filters out some of that noise.

4. Performance in Ranging Markets

Ichimoku wins (marginally).

Neither indicator performs well during extended sideways consolidation, but Ichimoku has a built-in “stay out” signal. When price is inside the cloud, the system tells you the market is in transition and you should wait for a breakout. The cloud acts as a visual no-trade zone.

Supertrend has no equivalent. During ranges, it flips back and forth between green and red, generating a string of small losing trades. You need to add a separate range filter (like ADX below 20) to avoid this, which Ichimoku handles natively.

5. Ease of Integration with Other Strategies

Supertrend wins.

Because Supertrend is a single clean line with a binary output, it slots into almost any existing strategy as a trend filter. Want to add trend confirmation to your RSI divergence trades? Layer Supertrend on top and only take signals in its direction. It takes up minimal chart space and does not clash visually with other indicators.

Adding Ichimoku to a chart that already has two or three indicators creates serious visual clutter. The five lines and shaded cloud compete for attention with everything else, and it becomes difficult to read any single tool clearly.

If you already have a strategy and just need a trend filter, Supertrend integrates more cleanly.

When to Use Ichimoku

Ichimoku is the right choice when:

You trade swing or position strategies on H4, Daily, or Weekly charts

You want one indicator to replace multiple tools (trend, support/resistance, momentum)

You prefer to analyze market structure before entering rather than react to signals

You are willing to invest the time to properly learn all five components

You trade pairs with strong trending tendencies (JPY crosses work particularly well with Ichimoku given its Japanese origins and calibration)

When to Use Supertrend

Supertrend is the right choice when:

You trade intraday on M15, M30, or H1 charts

You need clear, instant buy/sell signals without interpretation

You want a trend filter to add to an existing strategy

You prefer minimal chart clutter and a clean visual setup

You are newer to trading and want to build confidence with a straightforward tool before tackling complex indicators

Can You Use Both Together?

Yes, and this is actually the setup I recommend for traders who are serious about trend-following on MT4.

The multi-timeframe combo works like this:

Open Ichimoku on a higher timeframe (H4 or Daily). Determine the overall trend: is price above or below the cloud? Is the cloud bullish or bearish ahead?

Drop to a lower timeframe (M15, M30, or H1) and apply Supertrend with default settings (ATR 10, Multiplier 3.0).

Only take Supertrend signals that align with the Ichimoku trend on the higher timeframe. If the Daily Ichimoku shows a clear bullish cloud and price above it, only take green Supertrend flips on the H1.

This approach uses each indicator where it performs best. Ichimoku provides the big-picture directional bias and structure. Supertrend provides the precise, timely entry trigger. Together, they filter out a significant portion of the false signals you would get from using either one alone.

You can download both indicators from our free library: Ichimoku Cloud Indicator MT4 and Supertrend Indicator MT4.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Ichimoku better than Supertrend for forex trading?

Neither is universally better. Ichimoku provides more complete market analysis with support/resistance, momentum, and trend direction in one indicator, making it ideal for swing and position traders on H4+ charts. Supertrend gives cleaner, faster signals suited to day trading and scalping on M15-H1 timeframes. Your trading style determines which one fits.

Can I use Ichimoku and Supertrend together on MT4?

Yes. A proven approach is to use Ichimoku on a higher timeframe (H4 or Daily) to determine the overall trend direction, then drop to a lower timeframe and use Supertrend to time your entries in the direction of the Ichimoku trend. This multi-timeframe setup reduces false signals from either indicator used alone.

Which indicator gives fewer false signals – Ichimoku or Supertrend?

In trending markets, Supertrend generally produces fewer false signals because it has a built-in ATR filter that absorbs normal volatility. In ranging or choppy markets, Ichimoku’s Kumo (cloud) acts as a wider filter and can keep you out of bad trades more effectively. Both indicators struggle during extended sideways consolidation.

What are the best timeframes for Ichimoku vs Supertrend on MT4?

Ichimoku performs best on H4, Daily, and Weekly charts where its displacement components (Chikou Span and Senkou Span) have enough historical data to be meaningful. Supertrend works well across all timeframes but is especially effective on M15, M30, and H1 for intraday trading. Both indicators lose reliability on M1 and M5 charts.

Do Ichimoku and Supertrend repaint on MT4?

Neither indicator repaints once a candle closes. Ichimoku’s Chikou Span is plotted 26 periods back and the Kumo is projected 26 periods forward, but these are by design — they do not change historical values. Supertrend recalculates on each tick within the current candle but locks in its value once the candle closes. Both are safe to use for backtesting.

Most traders lose money not because they pick the wrong entry, but because they trade against the prevailing trend. If you can answer one question before every trade — “Is this pair trending, and in which direction?” — you instantly filter out the majority of losing setups.

This tutorial gives you a 6-step method to identify forex trends on MT4 using only built-in indicators. No custom downloads, no paid tools — just the Moving Average, ADX, and Ichimoku Cloud that ship with every copy of MetaTrader 4.

By the end, you will have a repeatable checklist you can run in under two minutes before any trade.

Prerequisites

Before you begin, make sure you have:

MetaTrader 4 installed (live or demo account — either works).

A chart loaded for any major forex pair (EUR/USD, GBP/USD, USD/JPY, or AUD/USD are ideal).

Your chart set to the H1 or H4 timeframe — these offer the best balance between signal reliability and frequency.

Basic familiarity with candlestick charts. If price action is new to you, spend 10 minutes reading through the structure section below before moving on.

All three indicators used in this guide are already built into MT4. You do not need to download or install anything.

How to Identify Forex Trends on MT4: 6-Step Guide

Step 1 — Read Price Action: Higher Highs and Higher Lows

Before adding any indicator to your chart, start with raw price action. Indicators lag — price does not.

Open your chart on the H4 or Daily timeframe and identify the most recent swing highs and swing lows:

Uptrend: Price makes a series of higher highs (HH) and higher lows (HL). Each pullback stops above the previous low, and each rally pushes above the previous high.

Downtrend: Price makes a series of lower highs (LH) and lower lows (LL). Each bounce fails below the previous high, and each decline breaks below the previous low.

Range / No trend: Swing highs and lows are roughly flat, bouncing between horizontal support and resistance.

Mark at least three consecutive swing points to confirm the structure. Two points can be a coincidence; three establish a pattern.

Tip: Use MT4’s trendline tool (backslash key shortcut) to connect the lows in an uptrend or the highs in a downtrend. If the line slopes clearly, you have a visual trend.

—

Step 2 — Apply the 200 EMA as a Trend Filter

The 200-period Exponential Moving Average is the most widely followed trend filter in forex. Institutional traders, algorithms, and retail traders all watch it — which makes it a self-fulfilling reference point.

How to add it on MT4:

Click Insert > Indicators > Trend > Moving Average.

Set Period to
200
.

Set MA Method to
Exponential
.

Set Apply to
Close
.

Choose a visible colour (blue or black works well) and click OK.

How to read it:

Price Position

Trend Bias

Price above the 200 EMA

Bullish — look for longs only

Price below the 200 EMA

Bearish — look for shorts only

Price crossing the 200 EMA repeatedly

No clear trend — stand aside

The 200 EMA acts as a directional filter, not a trade signal. Its only job here is to tell you which side of the market to trade. For a deep dive on EMA settings, see our EMA Indicator MT4 guide.

—

Step 3 — Use ADX to Confirm Trend Strength

Knowing the trend direction is only half the battle. You also need to know its strength. A weak trend chops you out with false signals; a strong trend pays you handsomely.

The Average Directional Index (ADX) measures trend strength on a 0–100 scale — without telling you direction.

How to add it on MT4:

Click Insert > Indicators > Trend > Average Directional Movement Index.

Keep the default Period of
14
.

Click OK.

How to read it:

ADX Value

Interpretation

Below 20

No trend — market is ranging. Avoid trend strategies.

20 – 25

Emerging or weakening trend. Proceed with caution.

Above 25

Strong trend confirmed. Green light for trend trades.

Above 50

Extremely strong trend (rare). Tighten stops, don’t chase.

Important: ADX measures strength only, not direction. Pair it with Step 1 (price action) and Step 2 (200 EMA) to know which way the strong trend is heading.

For full ADX settings and the DI crossover strategy, read our ADX Indicator MT4 guide.

—

Step 4 — Check Multiple Timeframes for Alignment

A trend on M15 means nothing if the H4 chart is moving in the opposite direction. Multi-timeframe analysis ensures you trade with the larger flow, not against it.

The 3-screen method:

Higher timeframe (H4 or Daily): Establishes the dominant trend direction. This is your “big picture” bias.

Trading timeframe (H1): Where you look for entries and exits. The trend here must agree with the higher timeframe.

Lower timeframe (M15): Fine-tunes your entry timing. Wait for a pullback on M15, then enter when it resumes in the direction of H1 and H4.

How to set this up on MT4:

Open three chart windows for the same pair: right-click the pair in Market Watch > Chart Window (repeat three times).

Set each chart to a different timeframe using the toolbar buttons (D1, H4, H1, or M15).

Tile them side by side: Window > Tile Horizontally.

The rule is simple: only trade when all three timeframes agree on direction. If the Daily is bullish, H1 is bullish, and M15 has just pulled back and is turning bullish — that is a high-probability long setup.

—

Step 5 — Use Ichimoku Cloud for Confluence

The Ichimoku Cloud (Ichimoku Kinko Hyo) provides trend direction, momentum, and dynamic support/resistance in a single indicator. It is excellent as a confluence check after you have already formed a bias from Steps 1–4.

How to add it on MT4:

Click Insert > Indicators > Trend > Ichimoku Kinko Hyo.

Use the default settings: Tenkan-sen
9
, Kijun-sen
26
, Senkou Span B
52
.

Click OK.

How to read it for trend identification:

Price above a green (bullish) cloud: Confirms uptrend. The thicker the cloud below price, the stronger the support.

Price below a red (bearish) cloud: Confirms downtrend. The thicker the cloud above price, the stronger the resistance.

Price inside the cloud: Trend is uncertain — avoid trading.

You do not need to master all five Ichimoku lines for this step. Focus on the cloud (Kumo) position relative to price. For a full breakdown of all five components, see our Ichimoku Cloud MT4 guide.

—

Step 6 — Combine All Signals for Your Final Verdict

Now bring everything together using this trend scorecard:

#

Check

Bullish (+1)

Bearish (-1)

Neutral (0)

1

Price action structure

HH + HL

LH + LL

Flat / unclear

2

200 EMA position

Price above

Price below

Crossing repeatedly

3

ADX reading

Above 25

Above 25

Below 20

4

Multi-timeframe alignment

All 3 bullish

All 3 bearish

Conflicting

5

Ichimoku Cloud

Above green cloud

Below red cloud

Inside cloud

How to score it:

Score of +4 or +5: High-confidence uptrend. Look for long setups.

Score of -4 or -5: High-confidence downtrend. Look for short setups.

Score between -3 and +3: No clear trend consensus. Stay flat or wait for alignment.

This scoring system forces discipline. It prevents you from forcing trades when the evidence is mixed — which is exactly when most losses occur.

Troubleshooting Common Issues

“The 200 EMA is flat and price keeps crossing it.”
This means the market is ranging, not trending. The 200 EMA is not useful in sideways markets. Check ADX — if it reads below 20, confirm the range and switch to a mean-reversion strategy or wait.

“ADX is above 25 but I cannot tell the direction.”
ADX measures strength only. Look at the +DI and -DI lines that accompany it: +DI above -DI means bullish momentum, -DI above +DI means bearish. Then confirm with the 200 EMA position.

“My three timeframes give conflicting signals.”
This is the system working as designed. Conflicting signals mean there is no clear trend consensus. Do not force a trade. Wait for alignment or move to another pair that shows cleaner structure.

“Ichimoku Cloud makes the chart too cluttered.”
Disable the Chikou Span (lagging line) and the Tenkan/Kijun lines by setting their colours to
None
in the indicator settings. Keep only the cloud visible for a cleaner visual.

4 Pro Tips for Better Trend Identification

Start with the higher timeframe. Always determine the Daily or H4 trend first, then work down. Never let a 5-minute chart override your higher-timeframe bias.

Respect the “no trade” zone. When your scorecard returns a neutral reading, the most profitable action is doing nothing. Flat markets account for the majority of retail losses.

Watch for trend exhaustion. If ADX is above 50 and price action starts making equal highs instead of higher highs, the trend is overextended. Tighten your stop-loss rather than opening fresh positions.

Pair this method with a trigger. Trend identification tells you which direction to trade. You still need a specific entry trigger — a candlestick pattern, an EMA crossover, or a support/resistance bounce — to time your entry.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best MT4 indicator for identifying forex trends?

No single indicator is best on its own. The 200 EMA is the most widely used trend filter, but combining it with the ADX for strength confirmation and the Ichimoku Cloud for visual confluence gives the most reliable trend readings on MT4. For a full comparison of trend tools, see our best trend indicators for MT4 roundup.

How do I know if a forex trend is strong enough to trade?

Check the ADX indicator. An ADX reading above 25 indicates a strong trend worth trading. Readings between 20 and 25 suggest a weakening or emerging trend. Below 20, the market is likely ranging and trend-following strategies should be avoided.

Which timeframe is best for trend identification on MT4?

The H4 and Daily timeframes are the most reliable for identifying the dominant trend because they filter out short-term noise. Use these higher timeframes to set your directional bias, then drop to H1 or M15 for trade entries.

Can I identify trends on MT4 without custom indicators?

Yes. Every indicator used in this guide — the Moving Average, ADX, and Ichimoku Cloud — is built into MT4 by default. You do not need to download or install anything. Simply access them via Insert > Indicators > Trend.

You’ve identified a clean trend forming on EUR/USD, set up your 20 and 50 EMA crossover strategy, and then stepped away from the screen. When you come back, the crossover happened two hours ago and the move already played out without you.

The default Moving Average indicator in MT4 doesn’t include crossover alerts. To get a moving average crossover alert on MT4, you need a custom indicator that monitors two MA lines and triggers notifications when they cross.

This tutorial walks you through installing and configuring an MA crossover alert indicator with popup, email, and push notification support.

Prerequisites

MetaTrader 4 installed and connected to your broker (Build 1000+)

MA Crossover Alert indicator (.ex4) – free download at the bottom of this page

MT4 mobile app on your phone (for push notifications)

Email SMTP details (for email alerts – Gmail or Outlook work fine)

New to custom indicators? See our guide on how to install custom indicators on MT4.

Step-by-Step: Setting Up MA Crossover Alerts on MT4

Step 1 – Download the MA Crossover Alert Indicator

Download the free MA Crossover Alert indicator from the link at the bottom of this page. Save the .ex4 file to your Desktop.

The indicator plots two moving averages and monitors them in real time. When the fast MA crosses above or below the slow MA, it fires your chosen alert on the closing candle.

Step 2 – Install the Indicator in MT4

In MT4, click File > Open Data Folder

Navigate to MQL4 > Indicators

Paste the .ex4 file into that folder

Back in MT4, right-click the Navigator panel and click Refresh

Step 3 – Apply the Indicator and Set Your MA Parameters

In the Navigator panel, expand Custom Indicators, find “MA Crossover Alert,” and drag it onto your chart. Configure the Inputs tab:

Parameter

Description

Recommended Setting

Fast MA Period

Faster moving average period

20 (day trading) or 50 (swing)

Slow MA Period

Slower moving average period

50 (day trading) or 200 (swing)

MA Method

0=SMA, 1=EMA, 2=SMMA, 3=LWMA

1 (EMA)

Applied Price

0=Close, 1=Open, 2=High, 3=Low

0 (Close)

The EMA responds faster than the SMA, making EMA crossovers better suited for shorter timeframes. For the Golden Cross (50/200) on the daily chart, many traders prefer the slow MA as an SMA.

Step 4 – Configure Your Alert Types

Still in the Inputs tab, scroll down to the alert settings:

Popup Alert: Set to
true
for an on-screen popup with sound. Works immediately with no extra setup.

Email Alert: Set to
true
for email notifications. Requires SMTP configuration (next step).

Push Notification: Set to
true
for mobile alerts via the MT4 app.

Click OK to apply. You should see two MA lines on your chart.

Step 5 – Set Up Email and Push Notifications

Email alerts – go to Tools > Options > Email, check Enable, and enter:

SMTP Server: smtp.gmail.com:465 (Gmail) or smtp.office365.com:587 (Outlook)

SMTP Login/Password: Your email credentials (Gmail requires an App Password)

From/To: Your sending and receiving email addresses

Click Test to verify, then OK

Push notifications – install the MT4 mobile app, open Settings > Messages, and copy your MetaQuotes ID. In desktop MT4, go to Tools > Options > Notifications, enable push notifications, paste your MetaQuotes ID, and click Test.

Troubleshooting Common Issues

Alerts not firing: Right-click the indicator, select Properties > Common, and ensure “Allow DLL imports” is checked. Verify the smiley face icon shows in the chart corner (click AutoTrading if it’s frowning). Confirm alert types are set to
true
in inputs.

Email alerts not arriving: Gmail users must generate an App Password (Google Account > Security > App Passwords) instead of using their regular password. Check your spam folder, and use the Test button in Tools > Options > Email to isolate whether the issue is SMTP config or the indicator.

Push notifications not received: Double-check the MetaQuotes ID has no extra spaces. Force-close and reopen the MT4 mobile app. Ensure your phone’s notification permissions for MT4 are enabled.

Too many alerts: Switch to a higher timeframe or widen the gap between MA periods. A 20/50 combination generates far fewer signals than a 10/20 setup.

Pro Tips

Run MT4 on a VPS for 24/5 alert coverage without leaving your computer on. Most brokers offer free VPS hosting for active accounts.

Combine timeframes. Use a 50/200 daily crossover alert for trend direction, then trade 9/21 EMA pullbacks on the H1. The daily alert sets your bias; the H1 gives entries.

Treat alerts as screening, not entries. When an alert fires, evaluate price action and support/resistance before trading. The crossover is a signal to pay attention, not an automatic trigger.

Apply to multiple pairs. Attach the indicator to every chart you trade and let MT4 scan the market for you instead of manually checking each pair.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can the default MT4 Moving Average send crossover alerts?

No. The built-in Moving Average only plots the line on your chart. You need a custom indicator to receive popup, email, or push notifications when two MAs cross.

Why are my MT4 crossover alerts not firing?

The most common cause is disabled autotrading permissions. Check for the smiley face icon in the chart corner, ensure “Allow DLL imports” is checked in indicator properties, and confirm alert types are set to
true
in inputs.

Do MA crossover alerts work when MT4 is closed?

No. MT4 must be running for alerts to fire. For around-the-clock coverage, run MT4 on a VPS and use push notifications to receive alerts on your phone.

What is the best MA crossover combination for alerts?

For day trading on H1, the 20 EMA / 50 EMA crossover balances signal quality and frequency well. For swing trading on H4 or Daily, the 50 EMA / 200 SMA catches major trend shifts including Golden Cross and Death Cross events.

Can I set up MA crossover alerts on multiple pairs simultaneously?

Yes. Apply the indicator to each chart independently. You can customize MA periods and alert types per pair and timeframe.

Most traders lose money not because they pick the wrong direction, but because they enter at the wrong time. They see a trend forming and jump in too late, right before a pullback wipes out their position. Or they catch a pullback but have no way to confirm whether the trend is still alive. The result is a string of stop-outs that drains both the account and confidence.

This strategy solves that problem by combining three indicators that each handle a specific job. The 200 EMA identifies the trend. The 50 EMA pinpoints pullback entries. And the MACD histogram confirms that momentum is shifting back in your favor before you commit capital. Together, they create a structured, repeatable MACD EMA trading strategy for MT4 that keeps you on the right side of the market.

What You Need: The Three-Indicator Setup

This strategy requires three indicators, all built into MetaTrader 4 by default. No custom downloads are necessary.

200-period EMA — This is your trend filter. It tells you whether to look for buys or sells. Nothing else.

Apply via Insert > Indicators > Trend > Moving Average

Period: 200 | Method: Exponential | Apply to: Close | Color: Red

50-period EMA — This is your entry zone. Price pulling back to this level during a trend gives you a low-risk entry point.

Same path as above

Period: 50 | Method: Exponential | Apply to: Close | Color: Blue

MACD (12, 26, 9) — This is your momentum confirmation. The histogram shows whether buying or selling pressure is increasing or fading.

Apply via Insert > Indicators > Oscillators > MACD

Fast EMA: 12 | Slow EMA: 26 | Signal SMA: 9

Once all three are applied, your chart should show two EMA lines on the price chart and the MACD histogram in a separate window below. For a detailed breakdown of each indicator individually, see our guides on the EMA Indicator MT4 and MACD Indicator MT4.

Step-by-Step Strategy Rules

Step 1: Determine the Trend with the 200 EMA

Before anything else, check where price is relative to the 200 EMA.

Price above the 200 EMA — Only look for buy setups. Ignore every sell signal.

Price below the 200 EMA — Only look for sell setups. Ignore every buy signal.

This single rule eliminates roughly half of all losing trades. You stop fighting the dominant trend and start trading with it. If price is chopping back and forth across the 200 EMA, stay out entirely — there is no trend to trade.

Step 2: Wait for a Pullback to the 50 EMA

Once the trend direction is established, wait for price to retrace toward the 50 EMA. This is where the strategy differs from simple crossover systems. You are not chasing breakouts. You are waiting for the market to come to you.

In an uptrend, price will periodically dip back toward the 50 EMA before resuming higher. In a downtrend, price will rally back up toward the 50 EMA before continuing lower. The 50 EMA acts as dynamic support in uptrends and dynamic resistance in downtrends.

Key rule: The 50 EMA must remain above the 200 EMA for buy setups, or below the 200 EMA for sell setups. If the two EMAs are converging or crossing, the trend is weakening and you should wait for a new separation.

Step 3: Confirm with the MACD Histogram

The pullback alone is not enough. You need confirmation that momentum is returning in your favor.

For buy setups: The MACD histogram should be turning from negative back toward positive, or showing increasing positive bars. This signals that buying pressure is building again after the pullback.

For sell setups: The MACD histogram should be turning from positive back toward negative, or showing increasing negative bars. Selling pressure is resuming.

Do not enter if the MACD histogram is still moving against your intended direction. Wait for the turn.

Step 4: Enter the Trade

Enter on the close of the candle that confirms all three conditions are aligned:

Price is on the correct side of the 200 EMA (trend direction)

Price has pulled back to the 50 EMA and is bouncing

MACD histogram is turning in the direction of your trade

Step 5: Set Stop Loss and Take Profit

Stop loss: Place it 10-15 pips beyond the 50 EMA on the opposite side of your entry. This gives the trade room to breathe without risking excessive capital.

Take profit (Option A): Set a fixed target at 1:2 risk-reward. If your stop is 30 pips, your target is 60 pips.

Take profit (Option B): Trail your stop along the 50 EMA. Move the stop to the 50 EMA value at each new candle close. Exit when price closes beyond the 50 EMA against your position.

Buy Signal Example

Pair: EUR/USD | Timeframe: H1

Price is trading well above the 200 EMA (red line) — uptrend confirmed

The 50 EMA (blue line) is above the 200 EMA with clear separation

Price pulls back from 1.0950 down to the 50 EMA at 1.0910

A bullish engulfing candle forms at the 50 EMA level

MACD histogram shifts from -0.0005 to +0.0002 — momentum turning bullish

Entry: 1.0915 on the close of the confirmation candle

Stop loss: 1.0895 (20 pips below, just beyond the 50 EMA)

Take profit: 1.0955 (40 pips, 1:2 risk-reward)

The trade hits its target as the trend resumes and price pushes to a new swing high.

Sell Signal Example

Pair: GBP/USD | Timeframe: H1

Price is trading below the 200 EMA — downtrend confirmed

The 50 EMA is below the 200 EMA with clear separation

Price rallies from 1.2650 up to the 50 EMA at 1.2690

A bearish pin bar forms rejecting the 50 EMA level

MACD histogram shifts from +0.0003 to -0.0001 — momentum turning bearish

Entry: 1.2685 on the close of the bearish candle

Stop loss: 1.2705 (20 pips above, just beyond the 50 EMA)

Take profit: 1.2645 (40 pips, 1:2 risk-reward)

Price resumes the downtrend and reaches the target within 8 hours.

Risk Management Rules

No strategy survives without proper risk management. Follow these rules without exception:

Risk per trade: Never risk more than 1-2% of your account on a single setup. If your account is $10,000, your maximum loss per trade should be $100-$200.

Position sizing: Calculate your lot size based on the distance between your entry and stop loss, not by using a fixed lot. A 20-pip stop on EUR/USD at 1% risk on a $10,000 account means 0.50 standard lots.

Maximum concurrent trades: Limit yourself to 2-3 open positions at any time. Correlated pairs (e.g., EUR/USD and GBP/USD) should count as a single directional bet.

No revenge trading: If you take two consecutive losses, step away from the screen for at least one hour. The strategy will generate new setups — there is no need to force a recovery.

Backtesting This Strategy

Before trading this strategy live, backtest it on at least 6 months of historical data. Here is how to do it properly:

Open the MT4 Strategy Tester or manually scroll back through historical charts

Pick one pair and one timeframe to start — EUR/USD H1 is a good baseline

Mark every setup that meets all three rules (200 EMA trend, 50 EMA pullback, MACD histogram confirmation)

Record each trade with entry price, stop loss, take profit, and outcome

Track your metrics: win rate, average win vs. average loss, maximum consecutive losses, and total profit/loss

Expect 3-5 setups per week on a single H1 pair. Across four major pairs, that gives you 12-20 opportunities weekly — more than enough for consistent results without overtrading.

You can also use this strategy alongside the standard Moving Average Indicator MT4 setups to confirm trend direction across multiple timeframes.

Pro Tips for Better Results

Trade during active sessions. The London and New York sessions (8:00-17:00 GMT) produce the cleanest trends. Avoid the Asian session unless you are trading JPY pairs.

Avoid news events. Do not enter trades within 30 minutes before or after high-impact news releases (NFP, interest rate decisions, CPI). The volatility spike can trigger your stop before the trend resumes. Use the economic calendar in MT4 or a free service like ForexFactory.

Use H4 for higher conviction. If you want fewer but stronger signals, switch to the H4 timeframe. The same rules apply, but the 200 EMA carries more weight and the MACD histogram produces cleaner momentum shifts.

Add confluence with support and resistance. When a 50 EMA pullback coincides with a horizontal support or resistance level, the probability of a successful trade increases substantially. Two reasons to bounce is always better than one.

Keep a trading journal. Screenshot every setup — wins and losses. After 50 trades, review the screenshots to identify patterns in your best and worst trades. Most traders discover that their losses cluster around specific market conditions that they can learn to avoid.

Frequently Asked Questions

What timeframe works best for the MACD EMA trend strategy?

The H1 and H4 timeframes produce the most reliable signals. H1 gives more trade opportunities while H4 offers higher-quality setups with fewer false signals. Avoid using this strategy on timeframes below M15, as the 200 EMA becomes too slow to provide meaningful trend filtering.

Can I use SMA instead of EMA for this strategy?

You can, but EMA is preferred because it reacts faster to recent price changes. This matters for the 50-period pullback entry, where you need the moving average to closely track current price action. Using SMA would delay your entries and potentially cause you to miss valid setups.

Does this strategy work on all currency pairs?

This strategy works best on major pairs that tend to trend cleanly: EUR/USD, GBP/USD, USD/JPY, AUD/USD, and USD/CAD. It also performs well on gold (XAU/USD). Avoid using it on exotic pairs or during low-volatility sessions where trends are weak.

What win rate should I expect from the MACD EMA strategy?

With proper execution and filtering, most traders report a win rate between 50-60%. The strategy is profitable because of its favorable risk-reward ratio (1:2 or better), not because it wins on every trade. Consistency in following the rules matters more than any individual result.

How do I avoid false signals with this strategy?

The three main filters are: only trade in the direction of the 200 EMA, wait for a genuine pullback to the 50 EMA rather than entering at extended levels, and require MACD histogram confirmation before entering. Avoiding trades during major news events and low-volume sessions further reduces false signals.

Every trend trader eventually runs into the same frustration with moving averages: the lag. By the time a standard EMA confirms a trend change, you’ve already missed a chunk of the move. The DEMA indicator for MT4 was designed to fix exactly that problem. Developed by Patrick Mulloy in 1994, the Double Exponential Moving Average applies the EMA calculation twice to mathematically cancel out a significant portion of the inherent delay, giving you faster signals without switching to a completely different indicator type.

In this review, I’ll walk you through how the DEMA works, the best settings for different trading styles, and a practical strategy you can apply on your MT4 charts today.

What is the DEMA Indicator?

The Double Exponential Moving Average is an advanced smoothing technique that Patrick Mulloy introduced in a January 1994 article for Technical Analysis of Stocks & Commodities magazine. His goal was straightforward: create a moving average that responds to price changes more quickly than the standard EMA while still filtering out market noise.

The DEMA formula is surprisingly elegant:

DEMA = 2 x EMA(n) – EMA(EMA(n))

What this does is calculate a regular EMA, then calculate a second EMA of that EMA, and use the difference between them to strip out additional lag. The result is a line that hugs price more tightly than either the SMA or the standard EMA of the same period length.

One important point: the DEMA is not built into MetaTrader 4 by default. Unlike the SMA, EMA, SMMA, and LWMA options available from the standard Moving Average menu, the DEMA requires a custom indicator file. You can download it free from the link at the bottom of this page.

How the DEMA Works on MT4

When applied to a chart, the DEMA appears as a single line flowing through the price candles, just like any other moving average. The difference becomes immediately obvious when you plot it alongside a standard EMA of the same period. The DEMA line turns at trend reversals noticeably earlier, and it stays closer to price during strong moves.

Directional bias works the same way as with any moving average. Price above the DEMA line signals bullish conditions; price below it signals bearish. Where the DEMA really earns its keep is in crossover setups. Because the DEMA responds faster, crossover signals between a fast DEMA and a slow DEMA (or a slow EMA) arrive earlier than traditional EMA crossovers, which means tighter entries and less slippage on the initial move.

The trade-off is real, though. That extra speed comes with increased sensitivity to short-term price spikes. In choppy, range-bound markets, the DEMA will generate more whipsaw signals than a standard EMA. This is the fundamental balance Mulloy built into the formula: you gain speed but accept more noise.

Key Features

Non-repainting: Once a candle closes, the DEMA value for that bar is permanently fixed

Significantly less lag than standard EMA, SMA, or SMMA at the same period setting

Works on all timeframes from M1 to Monthly

Customizable period, applied price, and line color

Pairs well with slower moving averages for crossover confirmation

Lightweight custom indicator with minimal impact on MT4 performance

Best Settings for DEMA Indicator

Because the DEMA is inherently faster than a standard EMA, you generally want to use slightly longer period values than you would with a regular EMA to compensate for the increased sensitivity.

The crossover between a DEMA and a standard EMA can be particularly effective. The DEMA turns first, and the EMA confirms. This hybrid approach gives you the speed advantage of the DEMA for entries while using the EMA’s smoother behavior as a trend filter.

Recommended starting point: Apply a 21-period DEMA alongside a 55-period EMA on the H1 chart. This combination captures trend changes early while the slower EMA keeps you out of most whipsaw traps.

How to Install DEMA Indicator on MT4

Since the DEMA is not included in MT4 by default, you’ll need to install it as a custom indicator.

Step 1: Download the DEMA .ex4 file from the download section at the bottom of this page.

Step 2: Open your MT4 terminal. Click File > Open Data Folder from the top menu. This opens a Windows Explorer window.

Step 3: Navigate to MQL4 > Indicators and paste the downloaded DEMA .ex4 file into this folder.

Step 4: Close and reopen MT4, or right-click the Navigator panel on the left side and select Refresh.

Step 5: In the Navigator panel, expand Custom Indicators, locate DEMA, and drag it onto your chart. Set the period (21 is a good starting value), choose your preferred color, and click OK.

For a detailed walkthrough with screenshots, see our full guide on how to install custom indicators on MT4.

Trading Strategy Using DEMA Indicator

Here’s a DEMA-EMA hybrid crossover strategy that leverages the DEMA’s speed advantage while using a standard EMA as a trend filter. Works best on H1 and H4 timeframes.

Setup: Apply a 21-period DEMA (blue) and a 55-period EMA (red) to your chart.

Buy Signal:
1. The 21 DEMA crosses above the 55 EMA
2. Wait for price to pull back toward the DEMA line without crossing below the 55 EMA
3. Enter long when a bullish candle closes above the 21 DEMA after the pullback
4. Confirm with MACD histogram above zero for additional conviction

Sell Signal:
1. The 21 DEMA crosses below the 55 EMA
2. Wait for price to rally back toward the DEMA line without breaking above the 55 EMA
3. Enter short when a bearish candle closes below the 21 DEMA after the pullback

Stop Loss: Place the stop 5-10 pips beyond the 55 EMA at the time of entry.

Take Profit: Target a 1:2 risk-reward ratio. Alternatively, trail your stop along the 21 DEMA and exit when price closes against your position beyond that line.

The reason this hybrid approach works better than using two DEMAs is simple: two fast-responding lines cross each other too frequently, generating excessive noise. Pairing the DEMA with a standard EMA gives you the best of both worlds.

DEMA vs EMA

This is the comparison that matters most since the DEMA was specifically designed to improve on the EMA:

Feature

DEMA

EMA

Lag

Significantly reduced

Moderate (less than SMA)

Whipsaw Risk

Higher in ranging markets

Lower, smoother line

Signal Speed

Faster entries by 2-5 bars typically

Standard baseline speed

Built into MT4

No – requires custom indicator

Yes – available by default

Formula Complexity

2*EMA(n) – EMA(EMA(n))

Standard exponential weighting

Best Use

Early trend entries in trending markets

General trend following and crossovers

Verdict: Use the DEMA when you’re trading actively on lower timeframes and want earlier entries into trending moves. Stick with the standard EMA for swing trading or when you’re operating in choppy conditions where the extra speed would generate too many false signals. Many experienced traders use both: the DEMA for entries and the EMA for overall trend direction.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the DEMA indicator free for MT4?

Yes. The DEMA indicator is available as a free custom indicator download for MT4. Unlike the standard EMA or SMA, the DEMA is not built into MetaTrader 4 by default, so you need to install the .ex4 file manually. Download it from the link at the bottom of this page.

Does the DEMA indicator repaint?

No. Once a candle closes, the DEMA value for that bar is fixed permanently. The only movement you’ll see is on the current unclosed candle, which is normal behavior for any moving average type.

What is the difference between DEMA and EMA?

The DEMA applies the EMA formula twice and uses the result to cancel out additional lag. Its formula is 2*EMA(n) – EMA(EMA(n)). This makes the DEMA noticeably faster than a standard EMA of the same period, producing earlier signals but with a slightly higher risk of whipsaws in ranging markets.

What is the best DEMA period for day trading?

For day trading on M15 to H1 timeframes, a 21-period DEMA paired with a 55-period EMA works well. The faster DEMA captures trend shifts early while the slower EMA filters out noise. Adjust periods based on the volatility of the pair you’re trading.

Can I use DEMA on MT5?

Yes. MT5 actually includes DEMA as a built-in moving average method, unlike MT4. You can apply it directly from the Indicators menu without needing a custom file. The calculation and behavior are identical across both platforms.

If you’ve tried the DEMA and thought “this is faster, but I want even less lag,” the TEMA indicator for MT4 is exactly where that logic leads. Created by Patrick Mulloy alongside the DEMA in his 1994 paper for Technical Analysis of Stocks & Commodities, the Triple Exponential Moving Average pushes the concept one step further. It applies the EMA formula three times instead of twice, stripping out even more lag and producing the most responsive line in the exponential moving average family.

That speed is both its greatest strength and its biggest risk. Here’s what you need to know before putting it on your charts.

What is the TEMA Indicator?

The Triple Exponential Moving Average is the most aggressive lag-reduction technique within the moving average family. Where the standard EMA applies exponential weighting once and the DEMA applies it twice, the TEMA runs the calculation three layers deep.

The formula looks more complex than the DEMA, but the logic follows the same principle:

TEMA = 3 x EMA(n) – 3 x EMA(EMA(n)) + EMA(EMA(EMA(n)))

Breaking that down: you calculate a regular EMA, then an EMA of that EMA, then an EMA of that second EMA. The formula combines all three layers with specific coefficients that effectively cancel out most of the lag that plagues standard moving averages. The result is a line that turns at trend reversals before any other moving average type of the same period.

Patrick Mulloy’s original motivation was practical. He observed that traders were constantly shrinking their EMA periods to get faster signals, but shorter periods meant more noise. The TEMA achieves the speed of a much shorter EMA while maintaining the smoothing characteristics of a longer one. A 21-period TEMA, for example, responds roughly as quickly as a 10-period EMA but produces a smoother line.

Like the DEMA, the TEMA is not built into MetaTrader 4 by default. You need to install it as a custom indicator, which takes about three minutes. The download link is at the bottom of this page.

How the TEMA Works on MT4

On your chart, the TEMA appears as a single line that tracks price very closely. Plot it alongside a standard EMA and a DEMA of the same period and the difference is immediately visible: the TEMA leads the pack, turning at reversals first, with the DEMA following and the EMA arriving last.

The basic interpretation is the same as any moving average. Price above the TEMA suggests bullish conditions; price below it suggests bearish. The angle and steepness of the TEMA line convey momentum strength. A sharply rising TEMA during an uptrend means buyers are firmly in control.

Where the TEMA diverges from standard moving averages is in its behavior during trend transitions. It will cross price and change direction 2-5 candles before a standard EMA of the same period. That means earlier entries and tighter stop-loss placement. However, the same responsiveness causes the TEMA to react to short-lived price spikes that a slower moving average would simply ignore.

In practice, the TEMA works best when paired with a slower indicator for confirmation. Using the TEMA alone as your sole entry trigger will generate too many false signals, particularly on timeframes below H1 and in pairs that tend to range rather than trend.

Key Features

Non-repainting: Completed candle values never change after close

Lowest lag of any moving average type at equivalent period settings

Works across all timeframes from M1 to Monthly

Customizable period, applied price, and visual styling

Ideal as the fast component in a dual-line crossover system

Lightweight .ex4 file with no noticeable impact on MT4 performance

Best Settings for TEMA Indicator

Because the TEMA is extremely responsive, you need to use longer period values than you would with a standard EMA. A 21-period TEMA behaves similarly in speed to a 10-period EMA, so factor that in when configuring your setup.

I recommend against using two TEMAs together for crossover signals. Both lines move so fast that they cross each other constantly during consolidation, generating an unworkable number of false signals. Instead, pair the TEMA with a standard EMA or even an SMA as the slow line. The speed differential between the two creates cleaner, more meaningful crossover signals.

Recommended starting point: A 21-period TEMA as your fast signal line with a 55-period EMA as your trend filter on the H1 chart. This gives you early entries while keeping the overall trend direction clear.

How to Install TEMA Indicator on MT4

The TEMA is not included in MetaTrader 4’s default indicator set. Here’s how to install it:

Step 1: Download the TEMA .ex4 file from the download section at the bottom of this page.

Step 2: Open your MT4 terminal and click File > Open Data Folder from the top menu.

Step 3: Navigate to MQL4 > Indicators and paste the downloaded TEMA .ex4 file into this folder.

Step 4: Restart MT4, or right-click the Navigator panel and select Refresh to load the new indicator.

Step 5: In the Navigator panel, expand Custom Indicators, find TEMA, and drag it onto your chart. Set the period to 21, choose your preferred line color, and click OK.

For a detailed walkthrough covering the full process, check our guide on how to install custom indicators on MT4.

Trading Strategy Using TEMA Indicator

This strategy uses the TEMA’s speed advantage for early trend entries while relying on a standard EMA as a directional filter. Best suited for H1 and H4 timeframes on trending major pairs.

Setup: Apply a 21-period TEMA (green) and a 55-period EMA (orange) to your chart.

Buy Signal:
1. Price is trading above both the TEMA and the 55 EMA (confirmed uptrend)
2. Price pulls back and touches the 21 TEMA line
3. A bullish candle closes back above the TEMA after touching it
4. The 55 EMA is still sloping upward (trend intact)
5. Enter long at the close of the bullish candle

Sell Signal:
1. Price is trading below both the TEMA and the 55 EMA (confirmed downtrend)
2. Price rallies back up to the 21 TEMA line
3. A bearish candle closes below the TEMA after touching it
4. The 55 EMA is still sloping downward
5. Enter short at the close of the bearish candle

Stop Loss: Place the stop 5-10 pips beyond the 55 EMA at the time of entry.

Take Profit: Target 1.5:1 to 2:1 risk-reward. For trailing stops, exit when price closes beyond the TEMA against your trade direction.

This is a trend-continuation strategy, not a reversal approach. You’re using the TEMA as a dynamic support/resistance level within an established trend identified by the slower EMA. The TEMA’s tight proximity to price means your pullback entries happen sooner, and your stop losses are smaller than they’d be with a standard EMA pullback strategy.

TEMA vs DEMA

Since both indicators were created by the same person in the same paper, this comparison is inevitable:

Feature

TEMA

DEMA

Lag

Lowest of all MAs

Low (between TEMA and EMA)

Whipsaw Risk

Highest of all MAs

Moderate (between TEMA and EMA)

Formula

3EMA – 3EMA(EMA) + EMA(EMA(EMA))

2*EMA – EMA(EMA)

Signal Speed

Fastest – turns first at reversals

Fast – turns before EMA but after TEMA

Best For

Active traders wanting earliest possible entries

Traders wanting reduced lag without extreme sensitivity

Built into MT4

No

No

Paired Best With

Standard EMA or SMA as slow filter

Standard EMA as slow filter

Verdict: The TEMA is the right choice if you’re an active trader who monitors charts closely and can quickly exit when signals fail. It rewards fast decision-making with the earliest possible entries. The DEMA is better suited for traders who want reduced lag but prefer a bit more smoothing and fewer false signals. Neither is objectively “better” – they serve different trading temperaments.

If you’re not sure which one fits you, try both on a demo account for a week. The difference in signal frequency will make the answer obvious.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the TEMA indicator free for MT4?

Yes. The TEMA indicator is available as a free custom indicator download for MT4. Since the TEMA is not built into MetaTrader 4 by default, you’ll need to install the .ex4 file into your MQL4/Indicators folder. Download it from the link at the bottom of this page.

Does the TEMA indicator repaint?

No. Once a candle closes, the TEMA value for that bar is locked in permanently. You may see the line adjust on the current unclosed candle, but completed bars never change. This makes the TEMA fully reliable for backtesting.

What is the difference between TEMA and DEMA?

Both were created by Patrick Mulloy in 1994. The DEMA applies the EMA twice using the formula 2EMA – EMA(EMA), while the TEMA applies it three times: 3EMA – 3*EMA(EMA) + EMA(EMA(EMA)). The TEMA has even less lag than the DEMA but is more aggressive and prone to whipsaws in ranging markets.

What is the best TEMA period for day trading?

For day trading on M15 to H1 timeframes, a 21-period TEMA works well as a fast signal line when paired with a 55-period EMA as a trend filter. The TEMA catches reversals early while the EMA prevents you from trading against the broader trend.

Can I use TEMA on MT5?

Yes. Like the DEMA, the TEMA is available as a built-in moving average method in MT5. You can apply it from the standard Indicators menu without installing any custom files. The calculation is identical to the MT4 custom version.

Most trend indicators tell you what the trend is right now. The Aroon indicator asks a different question: is a new trend about to begin? Developed by Tushar Chande in 1995, the Aroon measures how much time has passed since price made its highest high or lowest low within a lookback period. The name comes from the Sanskrit word for “dawn’s early light,” which perfectly captures its purpose – detecting trends at their very beginning, before they’re obvious to everyone else.

This unique time-based approach gives the Aroon an edge that price-based indicators like moving averages and the ADX simply cannot replicate. In this review, I’ll cover how it works on MT4, the best settings for different trading styles, and a strategy that takes advantage of its early trend detection.

What is the Aroon Indicator?

The Aroon indicator consists of two lines that oscillate between 0 and 100:

Aroon Up measures the number of periods since the highest high within the lookback period. The formula is:

Aroon Up = ((Period – Periods since highest high) / Period) x 100

Aroon Down measures the number of periods since the lowest low:

Aroon Down = ((Period – Periods since lowest low) / Period) x 100

With a standard 14-period setting, if the highest high occurred on the current bar, Aroon Up reads 100. If the highest high was 14 bars ago, Aroon Up reads 0. The same logic applies to Aroon Down with the lowest low.

Tushar Chande designed the indicator specifically to answer two questions that other trend tools handle poorly: when is a new trend starting, and when is the current trend losing steam? A Moving Average tells you the trend direction but lags behind. The ADX tells you trend strength but doesn’t indicate direction. The Aroon does both – and it does them earlier than most alternatives.

The Aroon is not built into MetaTrader 4 by default. You’ll need to install it as a custom indicator, which takes about three minutes. The free download link is at the bottom of this page.

How the Aroon Indicator Works on MT4

Unlike moving averages that overlay on your price chart, the Aroon displays in a separate indicator window below the chart with two lines: Aroon Up (typically green) and Aroon Down (typically red). Both lines move between 0 and 100.

Here’s how to read the signals:

Strong uptrend: Aroon Up stays above 70 (ideally near 100) while Aroon Down stays below 30. This means price is consistently making new highs and hasn’t made a new low recently.

Strong downtrend: Aroon Down stays above 70 while Aroon Up stays below 30. Price is making new lows while highs are stale.

Consolidation/range: Both lines hover around the 50 level, or they cross each other frequently without either one sustaining a position above 70. The market isn’t committing to a direction.

New trend forming: When Aroon Up crosses above Aroon Down from below, it signals the potential start of a bullish trend. When Aroon Down crosses above Aroon Up, a bearish trend may be beginning. The earlier you catch these crossovers, the better your entry price.

The 70 and 30 levels serve as your key thresholds. Aroon Up above 70 with Aroon Down below 30 is a high-conviction uptrend signal. Anything in between is a gray zone that requires additional confirmation from tools like the RSI or price action patterns.

Key Features

Non-repainting: Aroon values for closed candles never change

Dual-line system (Aroon Up and Aroon Down) shows both trend direction and emerging reversals

Time-based measurement provides a fundamentally different perspective than price-based indicators

0-100 bounded scale makes readings easy to interpret at a glance

Identifies new trends earlier than most lagging indicators

Customizable lookback period for different trading timeframes

Best Settings for Aroon Indicator

The default period of 14 works well for most applications, but here’s how to optimize for your trading style:

Parameter

Scalping (M1-M5)

Day Trading (M15-H1)

Swing Trading (H4-D1)

10

14

25

70

80

30

20

Best Pairs

EUR/USD, GBP/USD

Majors and crosses

Any trending pair

Shorter periods (10) make the Aroon more sensitive and generate faster crossovers, which suits scalping but increases false signals. Longer periods (25) slow things down and filter out noise, better for swing trading where you want high-conviction entries.

Recommended starting point: Use a 14-period Aroon on the H1 chart with the 70/30 threshold levels. This is the most widely tested configuration and provides a balanced signal frequency for day traders.

How to Install Aroon Indicator on MT4

The Aroon indicator must be installed as a custom indicator in MT4. Here’s the process:

Step 1: Download the Aroon .ex4 file from the download section at the bottom of this page.

Step 2: Open your MT4 terminal and click File > Open Data Folder from the top menu.

Step 3: Navigate to MQL4 > Indicators and paste the downloaded Aroon .ex4 file into this folder.

Step 4: Restart MT4, or right-click the Navigator panel and select Refresh.

Step 5: In the Navigator panel, expand Custom Indicators, locate Aroon, and drag it onto your chart. Set the period (14 is the default) and click OK. The indicator will appear in a separate window below your price chart with two lines.

For the full installation walkthrough, see our guide on how to install custom indicators on MT4.

Trading Strategy Using Aroon Indicator

This strategy combines the Aroon’s early trend detection with price action confirmation. It works best on H1 and H4 timeframes on trending major pairs.

Setup: Apply the Aroon indicator with a 14-period setting. Add a 50-period EMA to the price chart as a trend context filter.

Buy Signal:
1. Aroon Up crosses above Aroon Down
2. Aroon Up rises above 70 (confirming new highs are being made consistently)
3. Price is trading above the 50 EMA (overall trend context is bullish)
4. Enter long on the first candle that closes bullish after all three conditions align

Sell Signal:
1. Aroon Down crosses above Aroon Up
2. Aroon Down rises above 70 (confirming new lows are being made consistently)
3. Price is trading below the 50 EMA (overall trend context is bearish)
4. Enter short on the first candle that closes bearish after all three conditions align

Stop Loss: Place the stop at the most recent swing high (for shorts) or swing low (for longs) before the Aroon crossover occurred.

Take Profit: Exit when Aroon Up drops below 50 (for longs) or Aroon Down drops below 50 (for shorts), indicating the trend is losing momentum. Alternatively, target a 1.5:1 risk-reward ratio.

The 50 EMA filter is critical here. Without it, the Aroon will give you crossover signals during minor pullbacks within a larger trend, and you’d end up trading against the dominant direction. The EMA keeps you on the right side of the bigger picture while the Aroon times your entries within that trend.

Aroon vs ADX

Both indicators measure trend characteristics, but they approach the problem differently:

Feature

Aroon

ADX

What It Measures

Time since highest high / lowest low

Trend strength (directionless)

Lines

Aroon Up + Aroon Down (direction + timing)

ADX line + optional DI+ and DI-

Scale

0-100 (each line)

0-100

Best For

Detecting when new trends begin

Confirming whether a trend exists and how strong it is

Direction

Yes – Aroon Up vs Down shows bullish/bearish

Only with DI+ and DI- lines enabled

Lag

Low – catches trend starts early

Moderate – confirms trends already in motion

Built into MT4

No

Yes

Verdict: The Aroon is better for catching trends early at their formation stage. The ADX is better for confirming that an existing trend has real strength behind it. Ideally, use the Aroon for entry timing and the ADX for trade management. If the Aroon signals a new uptrend and the ADX rises above 25 confirming trend strength, you have a high-probability setup.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Aroon indicator free for MT4?

Yes. The Aroon indicator is available as a free custom indicator download for MT4. It is not built into MetaTrader 4 by default, so you need to download and install the .ex4 file manually. You can download it from the link at the bottom of this page.

Does the Aroon indicator repaint?

No. Once a candle closes, the Aroon Up and Aroon Down values for that bar are fixed permanently. The indicator only updates on the current unclosed candle, which is standard behavior for any time-based calculation.

What does the Aroon indicator measure?

The Aroon indicator measures the number of periods since the highest high (Aroon Up) and the lowest low (Aroon Down) within a given lookback period. Values are expressed on a 0-100 scale. When Aroon Up is near 100, a new uptrend is likely forming. When Aroon Down is near 100, a new downtrend is likely forming.

What is the best Aroon period for day trading?

For day trading on M15 to H1 timeframes, a 14-period Aroon setting works well as the default. Some traders reduce this to 10 for faster signals on M15 charts. For swing trading on H4 and Daily, a 25-period setting provides more reliable signals with fewer false crossovers.

Can I use Aroon on MT5?

Yes. The Aroon indicator can be used on MT5 via a custom indicator file, similar to MT4. Some MT5 builds may include it in the standard indicator set. The calculation and interpretation are identical across both platforms.

One of the biggest time sinks in forex trading is flipping through charts trying to figure out which pairs are actually moving. You open EUR/USD – flat. GBP/JPY – choppy. AUD/USD – maybe something there. By the time you’ve cycled through a dozen charts, the opportunity on AUD/USD has already played out. The trend strength indicator for MT4 eliminates this problem entirely. It scans multiple pairs simultaneously and tells you, in one dashboard view, exactly where the strongest trends are happening right now.

This isn’t just another single-line overlay. It’s a multi-pair trend scanner built on ADX calculations that gives you a bird’s-eye view of the entire forex market. In this review, we’ll cover how it works, the best settings to use, and a practical pair-scanning strategy you can apply immediately.

What Is the Trend Strength Indicator?

The Trend Strength indicator is a custom MT4 tool that measures how powerful the current trend is across multiple currency pairs and timeframes. It takes the core logic behind the Average Directional Index (ADX) – which quantifies trend intensity on a scale from 0 to 100 – and applies it simultaneously across every pair you’re monitoring.

Rather than plotting a line on your price chart, it displays the results in a compact dashboard panel, typically in a corner of your chart or in a separate window. Each pair gets a numerical reading and often a color code: green for strong trends, yellow for developing trends, and red or grey for weak or absent trends.

The concept builds on J. Welles Wilder’s ADX, first published in 1978. While the ADX indicator itself remains one of the most respected trend measurement tools in technical analysis, it has a fundamental limitation: it only works on the chart you’re viewing. The Trend Strength indicator solves this by running ADX calculations across your entire watchlist in real time.

This indicator is not built into MT4. You’ll need to install it as a custom indicator, which takes about two minutes.

How the Trend Strength Indicator Works on MT4

When you attach the Trend Strength indicator to a chart, a dashboard panel appears showing a grid of currency pairs and their current trend readings. Each row represents a pair, and each column typically represents a timeframe – though some versions show a single composite score.

The underlying calculation pulls ADX values for each pair. An ADX reading above 25 generally indicates a meaningful trend is in place. Above 40, the trend is strong. Above 50, it’s exceptionally powerful. Below 20, the market is ranging or directionless.

What makes this tool genuinely useful is comparison. When EUR/USD shows an ADX of 18 and GBP/JPY shows 42, you know instantly where the momentum is. Instead of spending twenty minutes scanning charts, you get the answer in a fraction of a second. The dashboard updates in real time as new ticks come in, so the readings shift throughout the session as trends develop or fade.

Some versions also incorporate directional information – not just whether a pair is trending, but whether it’s trending bullish or bearish. This is derived from the +DI and -DI components that feed into the ADX calculation.

Key Features

Multi-pair scanning: monitor up to 28 currency pairs from a single dashboard

Multi-timeframe display: see trend strength across M5 through D1 simultaneously

ADX-based calculation: uses the industry-standard trend measurement formula

Color-coded readings: instantly distinguish strong trends from weak ones

Non-repainting: closed-candle values are permanent and reliable for review

Dashboard layout: compact panel that doesn’t clutter your price chart

Customizable pair list: add or remove pairs to match your trading focus

Low resource usage: runs efficiently even when scanning dozens of pairs

Best Settings for Trend Strength Indicator

The ADX period is the primary setting that affects sensitivity. Here’s what works across different trading approaches:

Parameter

Scalping (M1-M5)

Day Trading (M15-H1)

Swing Trading (H4-D1)

10

14 (default)

20

45

Timeframes Displayed

M5, M15

M15, H1, H4

H1, H4, D1

The default ADX period of 14 is the standard Wilder setting and works well for most traders. Lowering it to 10 makes the indicator more responsive but increases noise. Raising it to 20 smooths out the readings but delays detection of new trends.

Recommended starting point: Use period 14, set the trend threshold at 25, and display three timeframes that match your trading style. Focus on pairs showing readings above 25 on at least two of the three timeframes.

How to Install Trend Strength Indicator on MT4

This is a custom indicator, so you’ll need to add the file manually. If you’ve never installed a custom indicator before, check our full walkthrough on how to install custom indicators on MT4.

Step 1: Download the Trend Strength .ex4 file using the link in the download section below.

Step 2: Open MetaTrader 4. Click File > Open Data Folder. Navigate to MQL4 > Indicators.

Step 3: Copy the downloaded .ex4 file into the Indicators folder.

Step 4: Restart MT4, or right-click the Navigator panel and select Refresh.

Step 5: In the Navigator panel, expand Custom Indicators, find Trend Strength, and drag it onto any chart. A settings window will appear – configure the pair list (separate symbols with commas), select the timeframes you want displayed, and set the ADX period. Click OK.

Step 6: The dashboard panel will appear on your chart. You may need to resize the chart window to accommodate the panel comfortably.

Tip: Dedicate one MT4 profile or chart layout specifically to the Trend Strength dashboard so it doesn’t interfere with your trading charts.

Trading Strategy Using Trend Strength Indicator

Here’s a pair-scanning strategy that uses the Trend Strength indicator as a filter before entering trades on individual charts:

Setup: Attach the Trend Strength indicator to any chart with ADX period 14, monitoring the majors and crosses across H1 and H4 timeframes. Apply a 50 EMA to your individual trading charts.

Step 1 – Scan for Strong Trends:
Open the dashboard and identify pairs showing ADX readings above 30 on both H1 and H4 timeframes. Ignore everything below 25 – those pairs are ranging and will generate false signals.

Step 2 – Determine Direction:
Switch to the chart of the strongest-trending pair. If price is above the 50 EMA, the trend is bullish. If below, bearish. Only trade in the direction of the trend.

Step 3 – Enter on Pullback:
Wait for price to pull back toward the 50 EMA. Enter when a candle closes in the trend direction after touching or coming within 10 pips of the EMA line.

Stop Loss: Place the stop 15-20 pips beyond the 50 EMA on the opposite side of your entry.

Take Profit: Target 1.5:1 to 2:1 risk-reward. Alternatively, exit when the Trend Strength reading for your pair drops below 20, signaling the trend is exhausted.

The real edge here is selectivity. Instead of forcing trades on flat markets, you’re only engaging when the data confirms genuine momentum exists. This alone filters out a significant percentage of losing trades.

Trend Strength Indicator vs ADX

Since the Trend Strength indicator is built on ADX, it’s worth understanding what you gain by using the dashboard version instead of the standalone ADX:

Verdict: Use the Trend Strength dashboard to decide which pairs deserve your attention. Then, if you want deeper directional analysis on a specific pair, apply the standard ADX indicator to that chart for the full +DI/-DI breakdown. The two tools complement each other perfectly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Trend Strength indicator free for MT4?

Yes. The version available on ForexOBroker is completely free. Because this is a custom indicator not built into MT4, you do need to download and install the .ex4 file manually, but there is no cost involved.

Does the Trend Strength indicator repaint?

No. Once a candle closes, the ADX-based trend strength reading for that period is locked in permanently. The value shown for the current unclosed candle will fluctuate until that candle completes, which is standard behavior for any real-time indicator.

What is the difference between Trend Strength and ADX?

The standard ADX measures trend intensity on whatever single chart you’re viewing. The Trend Strength indicator runs the same ADX calculation across multiple pairs simultaneously and displays everything in a comparative dashboard. Think of it as ADX multiplied across your entire watchlist.

How many pairs can the Trend Strength indicator scan?

Most versions support up to 28 pairs at once, which covers all the major pairs and popular crosses. You can customize which pairs appear through the indicator’s input settings. Running more pairs increases memory usage slightly, but modern computers handle it without issues.

Can I use Trend Strength on MT5?

The MT4 .ex4 file won’t work on MT5. However, equivalent multi-pair trend strength dashboards exist for the MT5 platform. The underlying ADX calculation is identical, so the readings and interpretation are the same.

Every experienced trader will tell you the same thing: always check the higher timeframes before entering a trade. If you’re buying on the M15 while the H4 and D1 are firmly bearish, you’re fighting the current. The problem is that checking five different timeframes means clicking through charts, waiting for them to load, mentally noting each direction, then switching back to your entry timeframe and hoping you remember everything correctly. It’s slow, it’s error-prone, and it breaks your focus at exactly the wrong moment.

The multi-timeframe trend indicator for MT4 solves this by displaying the trend direction across M5, M15, H1, H4, and D1 all in one compact dashboard panel. No chart switching. No guesswork. Just a clean visual showing you whether each timeframe is bullish or bearish right now.

What Is the Multi-Timeframe Trend Indicator?

The Multi-Timeframe Trend (MTF Trend) indicator is a custom MT4 dashboard tool that calculates the current trend direction on multiple timeframes and presents the results in a single panel on your chart. Each timeframe gets a color-coded arrow or box – typically green for bullish and red for bearish – so you can assess the overall market structure at a glance.

Under the hood, the indicator runs a trend detection algorithm on each timeframe independently. Most versions use moving average positioning (price above or below a key MA), though some use a combination of moving averages and slope analysis to determine direction. The result is binary for each timeframe: up or down.

This approach is rooted in the concept of top-down analysis, which has been a cornerstone of professional trading for decades. The idea is simple: higher timeframes establish the dominant trend, and lower timeframes provide the entry timing. When multiple timeframes agree on direction, the probability of a successful trade increases substantially.

This indicator is not built into MT4. You’ll need to download and install it as a custom indicator.

How the Multi-Timeframe Trend Indicator Works on MT4

Once installed and applied to a chart, the MTF Trend indicator creates a small panel – usually in the upper corner – displaying a row or grid of timeframe labels with corresponding directional indicators. A typical layout looks like this:

Each timeframe column shows either an up arrow (bullish) or down arrow (bearish), color-coded for instant recognition. Some versions use filled boxes instead of arrows, or add a neutral/yellow state for sideways conditions. The panel updates in real time as new candles form and close on each timeframe.

The key information this delivers is alignment. When all five timeframes show the same color, you have a strong confluence signal. When the higher timeframes (H4, D1) disagree with the lower ones (M5, M15), you know the lower-timeframe move is likely a pullback against the bigger trend rather than a new trend forming.

For example, if D1 and H4 are green while M15 and M5 are red, that tells you the daily trend is bullish but price is currently pulling back on the lower timeframes. That pullback is your entry opportunity, not a signal to sell.

The dashboard doesn’t interfere with your price chart. It sits in a corner as an overlay, leaving the candles and any other indicators fully visible.

Key Features

Five-timeframe display: M5, M15, H1, H4, and D1 visible simultaneously

Color-coded arrows or boxes: green for bullish, red for bearish, yellow for neutral

Real-time updates: readings refresh as each timeframe’s candles form and close

Non-repainting: once a candle closes, its trend reading is permanent

Compact dashboard panel: doesn’t obstruct your price chart or other indicators

Customizable timeframes: add or remove timeframes to match your trading style

Customizable trend method: choose the underlying calculation (MA-based, slope-based, or hybrid)

Alert functionality: optional notifications when all timeframes align in one direction

Lightweight: minimal CPU and memory usage even with continuous real-time updates

Best Settings for Multi-Timeframe Trend Indicator

The most important setting is the trend detection method and its sensitivity. Here’s what works across different approaches:

Parameter

Scalping (M1-M5)

Day Trading (M15-H1)

Swing Trading (H4-D1)

Timeframes Displayed

M1, M5, M15, H1

M5, M15, H1, H4

M15, H1, H4, D1

Trend MA Period

10

20

50

Trend Detection

Price vs EMA

Price vs EMA

Price vs SMA

Minimum Alignment

3 of 4 TFs

3 of 4 TFs

3 of 4 TFs

The MA period determines how sensitive the trend reading is on each timeframe. A 10-period MA will flip between bullish and bearish more frequently, while a 50-period MA only registers established, sustained moves.

Recommended starting point: Display M5, M15, H1, H4, and D1 with a 20-period EMA as the trend method. Wait for at least three timeframes to align before considering a trade, and prioritize setups where the H4 and D1 agree with your entry timeframe.

How to Install Multi-Timeframe Trend Indicator on MT4

This is a custom indicator that needs manual installation. For a detailed walkthrough with screenshots, see our guide on how to install custom indicators on MT4.

Step 1: Download the MTF Trend .ex4 file from the download section below.

Step 2: Open MetaTrader 4. Click File > Open Data Folder. Navigate to MQL4 > Indicators.

Step 3: Paste the downloaded .ex4 file into the Indicators folder.

Step 4: Restart MT4, or right-click the Navigator panel and click Refresh.

Step 5: In the Navigator panel, expand Custom Indicators, locate MTF Trend, and drag it onto your chart. In the settings window, select which timeframes to display, choose the trend calculation method (EMA recommended), set the MA period, and click OK.

Step 6: The dashboard panel appears on your chart. Adjust its position in the settings if it overlaps with important price levels.

Tip: Place the MTF Trend panel on your entry timeframe chart so you see both the price action and the multi-timeframe context in a single view.

Trading Strategy Using Multi-Timeframe Trend Indicator

Here’s a top-down alignment strategy that uses the MTF Trend dashboard to filter entries and dramatically improve your win rate:

Setup: Apply the MTF Trend indicator showing M15, H1, H4, and D1. On the same chart, add a Supertrend indicator with default settings for entry signals.

Step 1 – Check Alignment:
Look at the MTF Trend dashboard. You need at least three of four timeframes showing the same direction, and the D1 must be one of them. If D1 is bullish, you only take buy trades. If D1 is bearish, sells only. No exceptions.

Step 2 – Wait for H1/H4 Agreement:
With D1 setting the bias, wait for both H1 and H4 to align with it. When three higher timeframes agree, the setup is active.

Step 3 – Enter on M15 Signal:
On your M15 chart, wait for the Supertrend to flip in the direction of the higher timeframes. Enter at the close of the candle where the Supertrend changes color.

Stop Loss: Use the Supertrend line as your stop level – it provides a dynamic stop that adjusts with volatility.

Take Profit: Target 1.5:1 risk-reward minimum. Exit immediately if the H4 trend reading flips against your position, regardless of whether your take profit has been hit.

The power of this approach is that you’re only entering when the big picture supports your trade. The D1 and H4 act as gatekeepers. The M15 Supertrend is just the trigger – the real decision was made by the higher timeframes.

Multi-Timeframe Trend Indicator vs Chart Switching

Let’s compare using the MTF dashboard against the traditional method of manually switching timeframes:

Feature

MTF Trend Indicator

Manual Chart Switching

Speed

Instant – all TFs visible at once

Slow – click through each TF individually

Accuracy

Consistent algorithmic reading

Subjective – different traders read the same chart differently

Convenience

Set once, runs continuously

Must repeat the process before every trade

Context Retention

All TFs visible while you trade

Lose sight of other TFs while on entry chart

Customization

Configurable MA period and method

Full chart analysis on each TF

Depth of Analysis

Binary direction only

Full candle patterns, support/resistance, volume

Verdict: The MTF Trend indicator excels at giving you a fast, consistent read across timeframes. But it doesn’t replace deep analysis on individual charts. The best workflow is to use the MTF dashboard as your first filter – scanning for alignment – and then switch to the relevant charts for detailed analysis only on the pairs and timeframes that pass the filter. This saves you from analyzing charts that were never going to produce a valid setup.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Multi-Timeframe Trend indicator free?

Yes. The version available on ForexOBroker is a completely free download. It is a custom indicator and is not built into MT4 by default, so you’ll need to install the .ex4 file manually. There are no hidden costs or premium upgrades required.

Does the Multi-Timeframe Trend indicator repaint?

No. Once a candle closes on any timeframe, that timeframe’s trend reading is locked in permanently. The current unclosed candle may show a reading that updates tick by tick, but all historical values remain fixed. This makes the indicator suitable for reviewing past setups.

What timeframes does the MTF Trend indicator display?

The default configuration typically shows M5, M15, H1, H4, and D1. You can customize this in the indicator settings to include any MT4 timeframe, from M1 up to MN1. Most traders find that four or five timeframes provide the best balance of context without information overload.

How many timeframes should align before I enter a trade?

Three or more timeframes showing the same direction is the minimum threshold for most strategies. The strongest setups occur when all displayed timeframes agree. At minimum, the two highest timeframes in your panel should be in agreement. Never trade against the D1 trend direction.

Can I use this indicator on MT5?

The MT4 .ex4 file is not compatible with MT5. Separate MT5 versions of multi-timeframe trend dashboards exist and function identically. The trend calculation logic and interpretation do not change between platforms.
