Scalping on MT4 — M1 and M5 charts, trades held minutes to an hour — is hostile territory for most volume indicators. The signals that work beautifully on H1 produce too much noise to be tradable when you compress to a 1-minute bar. Only a handful survive.
The five below are the volume tools I’ve actually traded scalp setups with on EURUSD, GBPUSD, and gold during London/NY sessions. Ranked by signal quality at sub-15-minute timeframes.
Scalping Comparison Table

The full ranked list with rationale below.
1. Tick Volume — The Spike Detector
The simplest, most useful volume tool for scalping. Tick volume bars give you an immediate read on whether the current candle has real participation. A breakout candle with a 2x+ tick-volume spike is far more likely to follow through than one with average volume.
Why it ranks #1: Built-in, simple, fast to read, directly applicable to breakout confirmation on M1/M5.
Best timeframe: M1 / M5.
Pair with: 20-bar SMA reference on the volume sub-window.

2. Better Volume — Climax Bars at Range Extremes
The 4-colour histogram works beautifully on M5 for scalping range reversals. A green Climax-Up bar at the top of an M5 range during London open is a high-quality short-scalp setup. The visual classification fires fast enough to act on without freezing up.
Why it ranks #2: Climax bars give you scalpable reversal signals; the colour-coded read is fast.
Best timeframe: M5.
Pair with: M15 structural levels (don’t scalp without them).

3. BW MFI — Continuation Filter
Bill Williams’ Market Facilitation Index is underrated for scalping. The four-colour bar read (green = continuation, brown = exhaustion, blue = fake, pink = noise) lets you filter scalp entries for “real moves only”. Skip blue and pink bars; act on greens that align with your bias.
Why it ranks #3: Built-in, single-glance read, filters out fake breakouts that destroy scalpers.
Best timeframe: M5.
Pair with: 20 EMA on price.

4. MFI (Short Period) — Quick Pullback Reversals
MFI with a 9-period setting and 85/15 thresholds (instead of standard 14 with 80/20) gives you scalp-grade overbought/oversold signals on M5. The volume weighting filters out the noise that plagues short-period RSI.
Why it ranks #4: Volume-filtered fast oscillator for scalp reversal entries.
Best timeframe: M5.
Pair with: Higher-timeframe trend filter (H1 50 EMA bias).
Full review: MFI Indicator MT4.
5. OBV (Slope Filter Only)
OBV isn’t a primary scalp signal — it’s too smooth to fire actionable triggers on M5. But OBV slope direction makes a great filter: only take long scalps when M5 OBV slope is up, only shorts when slope is down. It catches the cases where price spikes against the underlying volume bias and stops you from chasing the wrong way.
Why it ranks #5: Filter, not signal — keeps you on the right side of intraday volume flow.
Best timeframe: M5 (read slope direction only).
Pair with: Any of the above as primary triggers.

The Scalper’s Volume Stack
The combination I run on every scalp chart:
- EURUSD M5 with 20 EMA + 50 EMA on price
- Volumes (tick volume) sub-window with 20-bar SMA reference
- Better Volume sub-window for climax detection
- BW MFI sub-window for bar-quality filter
Three sub-windows is the maximum I’d add to a scalp chart — more than that and you’re staring at indicators instead of price action. The decision tree: tick volume confirms participation, Better Volume flags climax/churn, BW MFI tells you if the latest bar is a real move or fake.
What I Don’t Use for Scalping
Three otherwise-good volume tools that don’t work on scalp timeframes:
Volume Profile — POC and VAH/VAL are session-scale concepts. The lookback you’d need for them to be meaningful covers more bars than a scalper considers. Use it on M15+ instead.
VWAP — close call, but VWAP is most useful at H1 anchored to session open. On M5 the line moves too slowly to be a primary trigger; use it as a directional filter only.
VSA — the Williams pattern set requires too much mental processing for the timeframes scalpers operate on. Stick to Better Volume’s simpler 4-colour read.
Frequently Asked Questions
What’s the single best volume indicator for scalping?
Tick Volume with a 20-bar SMA overlay. Spike confirmation on breakouts is the highest-edge scalp signal you can get from volume.
Can I scalp without volume indicators?
Yes — many scalpers trade pure price action. But adding tick-volume spike detection has consistently improved my breakout-scalp win rate by 5-10% over price-only entries.
Do volume indicators work on M1 charts?
Tick volume yes; everything else gets noisy. Better Volume on M1 is borderline — try it on EURUSD during London open and see if the climax classifications hold up for you.
Why does my broker’s tick volume look different?
Each broker aggregates quotes from different liquidity providers. Bigger brokers with more LPs show more ticks. The pattern matters more than absolute count.
Best timeframe for scalping volume tools?
M5. M1 is too noisy for most signals; M15 is past scalp territory. Stick to M5 with H1 as your higher-timeframe filter.
